Hi all. I'm new here but I've had german shepherds and a dutch shepherd in the past. i want to get another german shepherd from working lines instead of showlines.

I have been looking at various workingline puppies. i am hoping for some advice on selectin a pup, and on what is a reasonable price. I'm looking for a workingline dog.

I was looking at a pup from a breeder who is asking $1200 per puppy. The mother and father have a good preliminary hip score but do not have the final scores. the mother has a herding certificate, and the father doesn't have any titles though. I am a bit concerned because the breeder hasn't sent in the paperwork to get official OFA ratings.

If the breeder has not sent in for the final scores, are they going to follow through on other things with the pups?  Have they taken the x-rays and the hips don't pass now?  These are things to ask the breeder and think about.  I think that is a reasonable price for a puppy from working lines if the parents are health certified and titled.

Well, seems you answered your own questions.....if you feel uneasy, that should tell you something. By the way, OFA ratings don't get issued with paperwork alone. It requires new x-rays to be submitted according to the requirements of OFA, and the dog must minimally be two or older for such a rating to be issued. The OFA will provide prelim ratings that mean nothing in terms of finality. How old is the sire and dam of the litter? What are you willing to pay? Do you care whether the dogs have titles of any kind or not? What do you know of bloodlines, training etc.? What do you want in a pup and what are you planning to do with it? In other words, there are a lot of questions you are hopefully thinking about.

In my opinion that is a fair price for a puppy. What are your plans for the puppy? Do you have the pedigree you'd like to share?

So hips can change from an initial passing score to a failing one as the dog matures?

I'm very worried about dysplasia because i had a gsd with a very bad case of it, and we gave him artificial hips rather than have him put down. It was very expensive and even with his robo-hips there were some things he couldn't do anymore.

I'm looking for a dog that I can possibly compete with. I'm not looking for something for breeding. At least not yet. i can pm the pedigrees of the parents but i don't want to post them here because I've been lurking here and i've seen some posts get removed when breeders or their dogs are mentioned by name, so i don't want to do it. But I can PM you the dogs and the pedigree links.

The other thing that concerns me is the father's name is spelled one way on the breeders site, and another way on the database. Is that a big deal or am i being overly picky?

Oki I am not into titled dogs, and don't care enough for OFA ratings, but still 1200 seems steep. Did you had a chance to see what the pair produced? or is this first breeding? without knowing what I am buying I would not pay 1200.00 for it. I got a female out of untitled parents but I got her based on what the father produced, I was able to see his progeny being worked, plus the sire at least had hips rated, and the mother was out of lines that been good producers of hips, so I could at least guess what the hips could be like. But even than it is a chance, you don't know what you getting, but are willing to spend 1200 for it, if I would be you I would step back and re think my tactics. Don't get me wrong I just don't want you to be unhappy with your decision. Re think it dose not cost money and you won't be disappointed later on. When not sure I always choose to take one step back. It's a solid advise. When buying any dog you have to be 100% sure this is what I want, because shit happens but if you will go with that kind of assurance the disappointments will be easier to handle later on. Good luck.

Working line pups generally cost in the range of $800 (less often seen in recent years)-$1500.  Anything more than $1500, and I would be disinclined to consider it, unless there was something extraordinary about the parents, the pedigree, or there were inherent magical abilities to make a puppy worth considerably more.

I would not under any circumstances consider a puppy whose parents were not BOTH OFA cert and/or "a" stamped (and I do NOT mean zuch), as well as elbows. If the breeder had not done such basic health clearances before breeding,  I would pass on getting any puppy from that breeder, no matter what magical abilities the puppy is supposed to have.

Please pm the pedigree.
