How does the judge decides that the dog has the drive, self-confidence, and ability to handle stress during the courage test?

Keith, isn't this the designation used for the abbreviated protection routine used in the Sieger show or for the breed survey?

There is no longer a "courage test" in the sport of Schutzhund, it is referred to as the "long bite". Years ago for the distance attack, the helper would enter the field from the middle blinds, run to the center of the field and turn away from dog and handler and proceed down the field with his back to the team. The handler would shout for the helper to stop while holding the dog by the collar and "firing him up". At the signal of the judge the dog was released on the fleeing suspect. Depending on the speed of the pursuit, the judge would loudly tell the helper to turn into the dog at a time when the dog could be tested but also caught safely. On more than one occasion, collisions were somewhat violent, prompting the "Green Folks" to cry foul in Europe, you know, man running away, send your rabid animal after a human, lots of yelling, violent impact, etc., etc. Now it has become more of a prey bite and less of a true test of the dog, as exemplified by just about every dog at the 2009 SS getting "pronounced" for less than "sufficient" or "present" performance.
