HI All, First of all I'd like to wish you all a Happy Holiday Season.

Just received a letter from my home owners Insurance today telling us that they are dropping us as of Jan 2010..Our previous Insurance Company left the State of NJ about 5 months ago.We were informed that " New Jersey Skylands Insurance was our new provider..One day while sitting in my home saw a man walking on our property .I approached him and he stated who he was and where he was from. This is what the letter said that II received in the mail today.

The reason for nonrenewal is increased liability exposure presented by the ownership of your dog(s)..Unacceptable breed of dog,German Shepherd (s).

In over 20 years we have never had a claim against us for anything concerning our dogs.My husband and I are both Police Officers and retired K9 Officer..Our dogs are in 6 ft kennels that are always locked and on concrete pads.My kennels are also surrounded by a 8 ft privacy fence..Yet there are several PitBulls running loose in the town and no one ever seems to claim them after they chase and bite someone on the streets..we are responsible Shepherd owners who breed 1-2 litters a year ..Our favorite breed is # 4 in our country ,so someone out there must have the right insurance Company ..I feel that we are being discriminated against because of our breed ..Its not right !! The information on the new Ins Co. is below,so beware if you have a home and decide to purchase a certain breed because of them being discriminated against..

 Laker,

The same thing happened to me. I've had numerous dogs! GSD and Malinois. I was canceled for the GSD. My insurance went from $900 a year to $2400 per year with the, Mass "Fair" Plan. I luckily found that Quincy Mutual CEO is GSD owner and fan!! I'm back to the normal price check them out! Good luck

I can't believe that they just walked on your property un-anounced!

This is not uncommon. However, what I would suggest you do first is call and then WRITE the state insurance directors' office and tell him what has happened and how you keep your dogs, that you have never had a claim against you and that you are Police Officers. They may be able to bring to bear some pressure on this company. Sadly, all too many idiots who should not have GSDs or other large breeds who have not done the right thing are making the insurance companies feel like they can do this. They can do it as long as they can get away with it.

Good luck.

Yes, a few years back 7-10 years back;  I was told by AAA they would not insure my home as I had a rottweiler;  at that time a service/companion rottweiler.  Talk about discrimination.  I should have pursued the issue but did not as I had other dogs that I felt I wanted to keep safe and somewhat protected.  I did not want someone coming on my property and some of the dogs you could see from the street.  Of course my dogs were never allowed loose or even out front unless accompanied by one of us and on leash.  Calif.  I have State Farm and did then also;  have not had any problems with them.  Thank goodness.  Nanci

State farm is by far the best i have found.  Had a SchH friend, two dogs went after a mailman and got him pretty bad...  State Farm took care of everything and didnt even drop them!!!

There are many carriers who are outright excluding all dog liability from their polices altogether.  Not Nice!

Two years into owning my house my home owners insurance company left NJ. I then called and found a broker but was told my 3 german shepherds would not allow them to cover me. I contacted the underwritter directly and furnished my therapy dog certs and their sar certs. I was then accepted. The therapy dog certification seems in itself to carry some weight with insurance companies.

Had the same thing happen in Texas..Farmers would not insure me if I had german shepherds.. I am in the country now and the  Co  I have came on premises  before I moved the dogs here...So they only saw 4 cocker spaniels and two german shepherds... actually they didn't  even know what they were as they were in sky kennels....didn't ask and I didn't tell.

I already knew to keep mouth shut and not advertise what kind of dogs I had...sorry but  I cannot afford 2,400.00 worth of insurance on a small cottage in the country...That is what they up you to if you have a german shepherd..

I have a locked gate and surrounded by fence not able to be crossed...so they cannot come on my property ununivited but got news for the person with no fence....they can come on your property anytime they have a valid issue...just like the Electric company can come on your property any day or night for any thing they wish..you signed a right a way when you bought your property...all electric and gas companies have that in any deed.......

It is gonna get worse before it gets better..Now there will be more   anal laws going into place since we have crooks like  Robert Creamer , former felon , writing the blueprint on how to run our government., and what is not already controlled by a law will be soon.
,
Just my opinion,
YR
