Hi Animules,
Thank you for the funny link. Of course, the chorus is from Messiah, by Georg Friedrich Handel. It is too bad people don't know other pieces he wrote, including some of his other oratorios. Messiah is a wonderful work, but perhaps not really his greatest.
But this is a funny video and clearly everyone enjoyed it.
Merry Christmas to you as well. I hope all is well with you and the fur kids.

Hee hee, that's pretty cute. I like the short one who has to jump. Happy Holidays everybody. I'm too broke for gifts but as happy as I have ever been despite. I hope that is the case for many. Not the broke part, but the happy.

Hodie,
When I was growing up, "The Messiah" was an Easter piece. There was a big production for the public ,and school kids were recruited for the chorus. It was a BIG thing to be picked for the chorus.
The music teacher at my school used the chorus as a "carrot" to make us behave. If you acted up so many times, you were not allowed to perform, no matter how well you sang. I had the chance to perform only once. That's how I learned that I was a contra alto. I had thought I was an alto all that time!
Still don't quite understand the difference.

Messiah really is as much a piece for Easter as for Christmas. And the Hallelujah Chorus is the closing that is often taken out of context. It was written not for Christmas at all, but as a performance piece for charity. It is an interesting piece, but I prefer the editions that are more to what the composer intended, rather than the lugubrious and ill-trained huge choral spectaculars that some make them today.
An alto and a contralto is the same thing....voice range and quality (timbre - pronounced tamber) is what determines what one is called (among polite company not including RayRay). Altos, for example, when mature should be able to sing well the "F" below middle "C" and perhaps up to the "F" an octave above middle "C" Does that help? I am glad you got to perform this piece. Do you know the Christopher Hogwood edition on CD? It is one of the best in my opinion and true to what Handel intended.

Animules, thanks for posting this. It's hysterical. Mystere, I've never heard of the term, contra alto, but I'm familiar with the term, contralto. Are they one and the same? Contralto is the lowest female range.
