Another case of people lacking common sense. Dogs should NEVER be unattended when children are around, especially when food is involved. A very sad situation, but not only does the child die, the parents and others present suffer for their lack of diligence, but the dog breed will suffer as well because of it.

I just saw this post...Horrific.  The title should read "Child Mauled to Death by Parent's Ignorance".

Too many people see everything as human, and a dog is just not human (heck, some people aren't human, either).  To leave a child unattended with food and a pet dog that most likely was the boss of the house due to lacking training and socialization...Very foolish indeed, and it cost a child his life.  When I have parties or barbecues, the dogs are kept either crated, tethered, or, since I'm not fond of tethering, nor do I want to isolate the dogs, I use it as a perfect opportunity for some training, and work on the down-stay.  Of course, I am very attentive when there's food around, and my dogs have been taught since pups that it's mine, even when I give you the go ahead.  I can take food right out of their mouths and they'll let me, because they know that I am the pack leader.

Even though I know my dogs, I wouldn't just let the dog wander around the group, trying to get food...It's rude, disrespectful, and no one wants a dog trying to steal their food...Downstays are much more pleasant ways to join the party, and they get the leftovers when it's all said and done, in their dishes, after another sit/stay.

May the child rest in peace.
