Robin

Just to start,I know "you can't save them all".  So I need to know what I am missing before I have to put this puppy to sleep

This is what is going on--
from the time he was born he would nurse from momma and milk comes out his nose, it was like he wouldn't swollow as fast as he was sucking, then put on puppy mush he eats and acts like he can't breath and swallow at the same time and backs up and then rubs his face on a blanket then starts to sneeze and some comes out his nose. he has only gained 2 pounds from birth so he is a whopping 3 lbs at 5 weeks.  He runs, plays fights with the others, plays with the toys pushes other puppies out of the way to get to momma, (she is not nursing so much now), barks and growls, he does everything the others are doing.

Here is what I have done--
No cleft pallet
No Megaesophagus (done 4 x-rays with barrum)
No restriction can pass a trech tube very easy
pre-surg blood work showed some liver problems
Bile acid test show liver is normal no shunt
Chem panel everything normal but liver a little off.
Is the blood work off due to not getting enough food(malnurished)?
started tube feeding and once the food is in the stomach he is fine no problems (no sneezing, or anything funny)
Vet  wants to scope him at 8 weeks to see what is going on, he is to small to do it now due to anaesthesia risk.
So I have to tube feed him until 8 weeks and my goal is to get him to atleast 8-12 lbs before we have to sedate him. he handles it better then I do and I feed him about 30 cc 5 times a day will up it by 5 cc every week he has already put on some weight, like I said he is 3 lbs and was only 2.5 when I started so I think I am on a role(fingers crossed). I just started the tube feeding and he is gaining weight so I don't think it is that he can't absorb the food.

Now what am I missing all other puppies are fine no problems. Sire and Dam bred before nothing like this in the past, lines are crossed all the time never any problems.

So please help me figure out what is going on and if you have heard or seen anything like this.
Thank you for your time
Robin

Not saying this is whats wrong with your pup, but with our D litter we had one pup that seemed a week behind all the other pups, size and developmentally.  We were always worrying about him.  When we started to feed them (hamburg/goat's milk) he did the same thing as you said your pup did.  Not constantly, but he did it a few times every times at every feeding.  He always ate slow also.   When he was little we fear that we may have to have the little guy PTS.  He is now going to be 3 soon and has turned out to be a super nice, healthy k9...

Obviously your little guy sound much worse, but maybe if you can get some weight on him to do the scope maybe it wont be a horrible thing wrong with him???

Im thinking about the little guy, keep up posted...

Just an update

Delmar is still with us, so that is a great thing.  as I posted in the beginning he was only 3 lbs at 5 weeks and now  Drum roll please  ...................  he is 10.8 lbs at 8 weeks, he will be getting his scope in a couple of weeks. I tube fed him for a couple of weeks and he was still eating with the other puppies afterwords, but now he is eating with the others, so he eats 3 times a day when the others eat and a small bowl of just can food 1-2 times a day when he lets me know he is still hungry.
The only thing he does that is odd, is he burps after he eats every time.  So my question is will he be prone to bloat or because he is burping is that a good thing???
Thanks in advance
Robin

I was told if a dog can burp, it's a good thing and less likely to bloat.  I sure hope so because my 15mo old girl belches like a teenage boy.  Thanks for the update and keep us posted...some pics of the pups would be nice!

These are in order and you can tell the difference between 3 and 4 week when I started tubeing him.

Robin- What a cutie! Congrats on doing such a good job with him. Belching is a good thing, less prone to bloat.

This may not apply to dogs, but sometimes human babies have difficulty with the suck/swallow/breathe reflex and the symptoms are very similar.  If there are no structural abnormalities, they usually outgrow it once they start getting proper nutrition.  I used to work with babies in the NICU, and I know more about infant feeding than I ever wanted to.

Very interesting, it does sound like a developmental delay. We take these reflexes for granted. My youngest son needed to be "taught" how to spit, it did not come naturally to him. Doggy developmental delays, why can't they exist as well?

My dog is an excellent belcher. I really love it when he finishes his meal and sidles right next to me and burps right in my ear.
