Anyone have any idea whether she's more Dutch Shepherd/Lab or Plott Hound mix?   I'm guessing she's Dutch Shepherd/ Lab, but I'm just not sure. Also, could someone describe the difference between a single and double coat?  I'd love any and all input.

She's about seven and a half months old in this picture (taken last month). BTW, we live in Michigan, and her litter was rescued from nearby.

Looks more like a plott hound mix to me. Face seems all wrong for a Dutchy mix.

It's difficult to say because just because a dog is half/half doesn't mean the characteristics come out half/half for the parent breed.  I'd guess Plott hound and not Dutch shepherd, but I'm not an expert in either breed.  I also wonder if there couldn't be something else in her -- bullmastiffs and boxers come in brindle, for example, and could contribute to that lovely square head.  Ultimately it doesn't matter, really.  She looks like a beautiful girl!

We get a lot of compliments on her coloring, which is what has sparked my curiosity.  She's only estimated to get to be about 50-60 lb, which would probably rule out mastiff, I'd think.  I was thinking maybe lab....she does go on point for the squirrels, if that' says anything.  We were told by the rescue that she's probably shepherd/boxer, but I've had boxer breeders say she doesn't look anything like a boxer...and again, her "smaller" size.  Thanks for the input!

To my eyes her colouring is Plott hound, with that lovely dark shading on her head.  Dutch shepherds also aren't that common in North America, so that decreases the likelihood of being involved in the cross.  I don't think it's possible to know 100% unless you know the parents, but I'd believe the lab cross, particularly if it was a field bred Labrador.

Dutch Shepherd or Plott Hound mix?

Neither!

Maybe a lab / bull mastif, lab / presa canario, lab / pit bull, possibly a great dane cross,

There are many other brindle breeds out there too.

How is your dogs retrieve drive? Does your dog point at birds?

Maybe no lab at all. There is also DNA, so called, breed identification test kits out there too.

Otherwise, I would just call your dog a "heinz 57" or just a "who done it"t.
