Lewis Maletesta was a hell of a dog. A bi-color of strong physical features. Big boned with big head and absolute ROCK solid nerve. He was the type of dog that stood there and was in complete control of his environment. Very strong dog in the work with enormous fight drive. Was not the best hip producer, but definitely improved nerve and fight drive through breeding. He was in states here with Paul DiNenna at Misty Ridge kennel. I saw Paul work the dog and petted him. He was completely oblvious of me. Wished I had a bitch at that time to compliment him.

Heard alot of impressive things about Lewis.  Always enjoyed watching a son, Topp von der Maineiche, work.

One of those dogs that definately left a mark on the working lines.  Lewis himself was ugly in structure/head/type - not bicolor but dark black/tan - and he did produce quite a few hip and elbow problems.  But for the number of "ugly dogs that could really work great" he did make his mark on the breed, for sure.   I had the opportunity to breed my Fero daughter to Lewis and passed due to his looks and hip rating - I am sure that the pups would have been super in the work though I don't regret my decision to use another dog that went to Mink instead (better looking, better hip rating).

His father Mink was a hell of a dog also. Let's not forget where Lewis came from. The bomber pup we have the mother has Lewis and is line bred on Mink.

Mink definately stamped his progeny - generations from Mink I can still pick one out of a line-up - they have a distinct body and head type - long-bodied, little anglulation, anvil-shaped head (really really not nice to look at) but boy can they work- and "alligator grips" throughout, plenty of drive and aggression.  Super working dogs.  In the end, my choice in breeding to a Crok son who was nice in structure, big handsome head, better hip rating to my Fero daughter - ended up with two litters of really ugly, but really great working dogs LOLOLOL - the lines really do pass on the genes, strong ugly but great working genes coming from Mink.

Molly, You are right about the Black and Tan, his Black is so dominant on head and body without closer review he appears Bi. One of the reasons I acquired my current young male(11 months), is because his father is grandson of Lewis's daughter Gundel vom Wittgensteinerland, 6X BSP. The fathers mother is a Nick daughter so I figured plenty of fight drive through topline. On bottom I had Sirk daughter out of Asko vom Lutter daughter to strengthen hips and elbows. Anyway, Lewis's prescence in the pedigree had a big influence on my acquiring this dog!
