He's the syndicated columnist vet. This morning he responded to a letter from a GSD owner who experienced hind end issues with two of their animals and asked how and why does this happen? Dr. Fox placed the blame squarely on American breeders shoulders, saying when they choose the sloping backed dogs as the standard, they have deformed dogs.
I don't have a link, I read it in the paper, maybe someone interested will be able to find one. Anyway i think Marjorie should write him a letter and let him know that she is all about addressing better breeding for health.
Never a mention of different lines, by the way. It will be interesting to see if American GSD breeders respond to his accusation's in print.

This is not a rocket science how many other breeds you see being as sever deformed as GSD? There is not many, to be honest I don't remember seen any other breed being so f-up as gsd. I blame SL people especially the judges for that. Too much running in a circle and not enough of doing actual work. "Take this trouble for me: Make sure my shepherd dog remains a working dog for I have struggled my life long for that aim". Utility before beauty.

The link above does not work so here is the article from another site including Dr Fox's website address.
Question:
We have lost two precious, wonderful, beautiful German shepherds, apparently due to health problems. Both dogs suffered crippling hind-leg deterioration. In both cases, the overall strength in their hind legs and lower back appeared to simply give out. One of them had gotten to the point where he couldn't walk at all. Is there any way we can prevent this from happening to future German shepherds? Or is this species simply doomed?
Answer:
If you go to Germany, you will see what the standards are before anyone with a registered German shepherd is permitted to breed the dog and sell any of the puppies as certified pedigree offspring. What American breeders have done to this superb breed is one of the greatest tragedies of the past century -- selectively breeding dogs with sharply sloping hindquarters as a desirable breed standard. In actuality, they created weak-legged dogs prone to hip and spinal problems. In Germany, the breed club is not permitted to breed a dog like that and sell the pups. I will never forget seeing a pathetic -- but otherwise healthy and spirited -- American-bred German-shepherd pup of 16 weeks dragging and flapping his deformed hindquarters as he tried to play with my dogs in the local park. At least he had been neutered. Much can be done to help such dogs, especially massage therapy, physical therapy, especially swimming, acupuncture, and anti-inflammatory herbal supplements when there is pain, one of my choices being New Chapter's Zyflamend.

It shows how uneducated some people with a little bit power can do a lot of damage.

this is very basic common sense the whole world knows that American breeders are the culprits in ruining the breed
by bazza on 04 December 2009 - 15:12
Please do not take this the wrong way but could you tell me how the American breeders have ruined the breed? Don't you think that's a bit wide sweeping of a statement.
by Uglydog on 04 December 2009 - 16:12
No Bazza
If you dont know by now, you are mentally impaired.
There are but a few dedicated working breeders, in comparison to the new engineers of the breed, in it for the $

No not mentally impaired, the poster above says " American breeders have ruined the breed" Does this mean they are to blame for everything wrong in the breed? The American breeders have absolutely no influence on my lines, or thousands upon thousands of others, so the statement is incorrect. They most certainly have ruined there own lines which are numerically small compared to the overall population of GSDS. They have not RUINED THE BREED, only the lines they breed. I f you can't see that then it is you and not i who is mentally impaired, thank you.

Bazza -- I agree with you

They're only talking about American Show Lines. Not German show lines bred in the US. Or working lines bred in the US.
