So, everyone knows I have been looking for a female puppy for some time now, looking at a decent amount of different litters that I'm interested in.  One of the dogs I had been looking into was possibly something out of Iltis von der Wildsau, but no one is breeding to him now that I can find.  I talked to Chip's friend and he said if I had a female I could have her bred to Iltis.  Does anyone know anything about possible leasing.....I've heard people do that.   Or anyone who actually is breeding to him? Or any other ideas?   Anubis is doing well in his training, and I know I'm ready for the next one now.

You could see if there collecting any semen and buy a straw to keep on hand till you find that right female.

Bob,
Excellent idea! :-)

Leasing a dog is not necessarily a bad idea. Just keep in mind that it is a huge responsiblity! There are always things that can go wrong, so you you want to make sure that you have a good strong lease agreement that covers you in case anything happens to the bitch. Good Luck

Bob how do you go about storing the semen? How long can it be stored for? Thanks.

snaiper:

I,m just learning my self on the subject thinking about collecting and storing some of my Axels semen. Hell I figured all you needed was a hooker, dixiecups and a beer cooler... but i was wrong I guess saliva isn,t good in the collection process. I,ll let you know what I find out.

Any reproductive vet can collect, evaluate and store semen appropriately...... There ar ea numer of organizations who have websites that list the vets who work with them

International Canine Semen Bank (ICSB)......

ICG has a new name and it totally has left my head... International Canine Genetics is the old name.....

Stud owners on this list might be helpful as far as all the details go.. I just buy mine!!

Good luck

About 4 years ago, I had Chip send semen to use with one of my girls, and he seemed a really great guy.  But when my vet screwed up (actually, a lab mixup of the progesterone test by a facility student) and the breeding didn't take, we tried to contact him quite a few times about retrying on the next cycle, and he never returned the calls.  Be prepared to lose a good chunk of change and only get one shot at getting it right.

Bob it works better if you use the ice cube trays for future reference... i have tried it all and that seems to work the best:)

Seriously though, quality frozen semen that is stored correctly can last many many years

Forget the semen... i can't wait till collecting and freezing eggs is common place. Collecting all the quality eggs from super breedings bitches when you don't breed them and sticking them in a surrogate would be really cool.

I have not leased a female... I do think it can be a scary thing... something going wrong and then there are a lot of headaches to deal with the leaser and the leasee. Just be careful

One other thing to keep in mind........I don't think that the SV recognizes litters out of "frozen" semen.?
I think they have specific stipulations in regards to forms of "artificial insemination"......??
I would also check with the SV, WDA or UScA... just in case........
I don't know how it could/would effect progeny in the future with trials, breed surveys and such.....
