Hi I am looking into getting a malinois pup to compete in schutzhund with. My training director brought up a good point. He says that there are not many national events that they can compete in. Now I am not saying that at this point I am even good enough to take a dog to those levels, but I aspire to be. So, my question is what national events can you enter into with a malinois. I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Why couldn't they compete?

Because they are not a shepherd. Is this correct, or is my training director mistaken? I guess a better question would be what couldn't they compete in because they are not a GSD. Sorry about the questions, I'm pretty new to schutzhund and still don't completely understand all the different organizations and their relationships with everything.

I might be wrong but I think you can do Schutzhund with any dog. They just have to have all the requirements and qualify.
I don't think Schutzhund is only open to the GSD.

No, I understand that. I am asking about specific events. Like they obviously couldn't compete at the GSD nationals, but are there any other specific events they would be excluded from.

You could compete at the DVG, or AWMA nationals, the AWDF championship, I believe as long as the dog is handler owner trained the working dog championship as well..

Correct me if I am wrong but it can be a mutt.. Maybe not national level...But many a dog has been titled thru Schutz H 3 and not even a pure bred dog.
National contenders may have rules about have to have an AKC reg. which , I believe AKC is now registering any dog with pics and a vets declaration....

You can show a mutt with the DVG at a national event and at the AWDF I also believe with the working dog championshipas long as its HOT

Yellow Rose you are correct. In ScH if a dog is not registered even tho it is purebred it is still listed as a mix.
Yes the AKC is now accepting mixes for performance events. I believe these events are going to be seperated i.e. mixes only competing against mixes and purebreds against purebreds. I went to their website and that is the way I understand it.
