I have a client who’s 7 mo old GSD loves to it its own feces. I heard of adding figs to their diet and it’s not working. It’s hard to correct the dog when she’s loose in the yard during the day. Any suggestions?

Good morning,What I beleive is that there is something going on when a dog does this.Something like maybe the diet being deficient in certain minerals, the quality of the diet, diet NOT proper for the dog,dog not digesting its food etc.I have seen this with one of my own dogs when certain diets were tried and then all of a sudden the dog stops doing it when on different food.Hope this helps.

I think you see that in a female more than the males, the female has that instinct build in for when they have a litter of pups, they are the ones that are going to keep their den clean.

The most you can do is just after they go #2, call them inside, and go pick it up, before they can eat them, and I have heard good results from adding pineapple to their diet.

And as far as her eating her own, she's not going to catch anything from herself, it is just being recycled, if it was another dogs poop, than that would lead to health problems.

Just remember no kisses for her

There are many reasons for dogs eating there own excrement, its not a very pretty sight i know, i have had couple of dogs over my life span that have done it,i can give only 2 reasons why!!....first is pure utter greed!!! ,the second is a sulfur deficiency,What I have found to be quite effective is putting a lump of rock sulphur in the water bowl, all the time ,it lasts along time so you do not need to purchase it every week, when refilling the water bowl give the rock sulphur a quick wash under the tap,i hope this helps you out,Regards

L-Glutamate amino acid will make the stool taste bad and will deter stool eating.

This link may help offer some helpful suggestions. Hope something in it can be useful. I tried the product Forbid, with one of my dogs years ago and it worked very well, after awhile she stopped doing it. Good Luck
