The author of the Story is teaming up with  Hallmark Hall of Fame and Petfinders .com all accross the USA to find homes for over   40,000 dogs that need homes and only half of them will ever leave a shelter.

They are planning to institute a program like    Adopt a dog for Christmas like the show tonight....I can hardly see to type for the wet eyes..

I recorded it, but does the dog die???I don't want to ruin my week--I want a happy ending. Someone warn me if the dog dies. please.

 Read elsewhere:

Did you watch the Hallmark Special last evening, A Dog Named Christmas?
It laid the groundwork for an adoption program via Petfinder whereby you
get a dog from a shelter, give it a nice Christmas, and then take it
back to the pound. Or you can keep it.

"Foster a lonely pet" is the name of the program. The movie pulled on
your heart strings, of course. In true Hallmark fashion there's the
expected happy ending: the dog gets to stay with the family.

I envision now hundreds of thousands of families who watched the movie
and are being nagged to death by their children to get a dog for
Christmas, just for a few days, maybe a couple of weeks. Moms and dads
who've never really wanted a dog or had dogs in their past lives
collapsing under the weight of the guilt trips laid on them by their
progeny and rolling over. "It's just for Christmas, mommy." "How come
you're so mean, daddy?" "We'll take care of it. Honest."

Christmas. Hectic. Harried adults. Screaming kids. Turkey bones. Glass
ornaments. A shelter dog of who-knows-what background and temperament,
crated or kenneled for who-knows-how-long. Perhaps a shy and timid dog.
Or an untrained large dog. Maybe one who has digestive problems or isn't
all that reliable with his house training - oh! the joys of cleaning up
after a temporary dog in the midst of the normal hustle and bustle. The
kids are nowhere to be seen when it comes time to feed and walk the
house guest.

Then again, maybe all goes well. The dog is nice and adapts, it doesn't
get underfoot nor does it bark and howl all night in a strange house.
The kids have fun, Christmas pictures show a happy family, 2.5 kids and
a dog. Comes December 26 and the dog goes back to the pound.

Poor dog - in either case.

Bringing a dog into a home should never be an impulse decision. Even
fostering a dog needs to be thought out and planned for. Dogs are not
disposable commodities, they're not temporary Christmas decorations, and they
shouldn't be treated like unwanted presents to be returned the day after
Christmas.

I'm disappointed that Hallmark and Petfinder manipulate people into just
that very mindset.

GetaGrip:   The person that wrote that is totaling missing the point of the whole story by the author'

You can take a negative approach to anything in LIFE:

People all over the world have programs at Christmas for babies in Foster Homes, homeless people in Shelters, and many other people who are ALONE  at Christmas
...

You do not   take these people home for always,,you help these people enjoy and have a little glimpse of CARE at a very hard time in the year to cope..  It is lonely to be without a family at Christmas or any holiday .    Any thing we can do to share, with those that have no connection to people, is what it is all about..
Dogs are included in this now.   Splendid idea, and the man in the show   , did not take the dog , in the first place.  He made the young boy take the dog back after Christmas.

THe person missed the two most important points....ONE:  The boy involved was mentally impaired, but HIS  love for all animals  was unlimited and he was driven by giving to animals..Many mentally impaired people can be reached thru a PET or an animal....The dog involved was already   trained in some obedience,,,the boy called them Tricks...This boy was the center of the dogs life as well as the dog ,,,  read the Father  real well.. The dog  worked on the Father all thru the story..
Unbelievable how a dog can transmitt and tug at the inner being of a MAN  who was determined to shut out the tragedy of losing his companion in the war.. The wife was correct...HE was refusing to reach out and let the BOY   have a pet as he relived his sad past involving dogs..

Won't say anymore so YOu won't know what happened.....Putting pets in homes for Christmas is not easy..BUt , face it,,anyone who goes to the trouble to go down to Rescue or Pounds and sign up for taking a dog for one week during Christmas , when the workers leave the pound for 4 days unattended and only come and throw some food in and go about their holiday...is not gonna  reap dogs unattended.....This family  never once , turned this dog asside for their own good...  IN fact, another   lesson learned....the  boy , got busy himself and got on the phone and signed up more than 10 I remember, other families to take a dog . He learned  how to think independently,, but with his MOms guidance...

The person who wrote the above has a very Narrow look into the WINDOW  of  WHy the Author wrote the story or the value that he hooked up with PETFINDERS>COM  to help dogs..   Quit  looking for NEGAtivES in life and look for POSITIVES in what we receive.

just my opinions,

If I am going to cry when I watch the movie, tivo'd, then I sure as heck would be falling apart when I took one back after the holidays. My husband is no fool he wouldnot let one in the house, knowing full well I could not do it.

Gershep 2 no the dog doesn't die.  It has a great, altho predictable, ending.

YR nice post and how true.  The person that wrote that must be a Scrooge in disguise.  I think the Hallmark program is great.  I wish I had some extra room to take a foster in.

Yes, 1doggie2   be ready for no dry eyes...the whole show is a heart warming story but I cried a bucket fulll  ..You can't help it.

This was one of the BEST written Holiday stories I have watched in a long time.

Tears of Joy or Tears of Sorrow  , you will have both.. Tears are good for us, just like Laughing is good for the human soul.

You will experience all three and life will be a bit more relaxed for a few hours after watching  the show..Hope all of you T vo or recoreded it.
Probably would also find it on U tube would be my guess..
It was called a " World Premiere", so that means it is in book form or dvd somewhere. Probably at Hallmark Stores...would be a wonderful book for a teenager for a stocking stuffer under the Chimney .
