AandA

Took the hound out for his usual gallop over the fields last night and it’s always easy to tell when he’s on the scent of something. He goes into a really fast trot with his nose to the ground and a serious determined manner about him. You know, when even the muscles on their ears appear to be working hard.

Anyway he did this again last night & I thought nothing of it as he hammered about in the dark and then I heard this unearthly commotion. It wasn’t barking or yelping but a low deep grumbling along with snuffling and various snarls, snorts & hisses. I quickly turned my torch on and there 15 yards away was ol’ Nelson standing over a badger.

I’m not entirely sure an actual fight was in progress as it looked more like Nelson trying to dominate and the badger telling him where to go, but the last thing I wanted to do was to step in & break them up, how exactly do you break up a badger/dog fight!? It took a couple of firm ‘Leave it’ before Nelson moved away and even then he wanted to go back for more – I don’t think he’d had so much fun for years.

By the time we got back to the car and I got over the initial shock I was just a litt

cont'd... I was just a little proud of him, scenting out the critter, showing no fear & standing his ground. He got extra tripe for his supper.

That badger would have been a carcass with my last two.  I never really took issue with their dispensing with squirrels and rabbits in the yard...figured they were doing Darwin's work making sure that the slow or stupid ones didn't get the opportunity to reproduce.  The ex-girlfriend's cat on the other hand...

LOL Keith, is that why she is now X?

Badgers are not around here, it would be very cool to see one.  They can be quite the fighters can they not?

WOW, thanks for that tigermouse.  That would be quite something to see let alone video!  It kinda looked like they were both going after a bowl of dog food.  He shook that fox like a dog would.  I was relieved to see the fox get up and high tail it.

Do you guys have fox and badgers in your backyards like that?  Both were brazen little critters!

Foxes are pretty common in most towns and cities as they make a good living from all sorts of scraps, discarded fast food etc In fact I often see one during the day out of my office window in the work's car park. Sort of like racoons for you guys in the states but nowhere near as much a nuisance.

Badgers, as far as I know,  will only be seen in the countryside and if they do come into your garden (yards as you guys call them) you'll be close to open land. There's a big issue going on over here regarding badgers & bovine TB. Some say they carry it and pass it onto cattle herds so require culling and others say they have nothing to do with it.

And as tigermouse mentioned they are tough little buggers... part of the weasel family I believe.

Cheers,

*shudders*

The one thing that terrifies me, when I'm out in the wilds with a dog at dusk, I really don't like the prospect of my dog getting into it with a badger.
