I live in Northern Idaho, and I have Kentucky bluegrass for my lawn. The dogs have done a number on the spots where they tend to walk the most, and where they like to do their playing the most. This time of year, there's not much that I can do to fix it, but in the spring, I'll fertilize it really well, and make sure it stays watered, till the roots get better established, and then next fall, there won't be a problem with this. The rest of yard was like this a year ago, but some nice steer manure made a world of difference. If you get the roots down deeper, then it won't take nearly as much water to keep the grass from dying, and it'll take a lot more abuse, regardless of the type of grass you end up using.
I know that some parts of California have limited water supplies and frown on folks using it to water gardens and lawns...But do what you can.

I am also in Southern California...........and there was only 1 solution for my pack of 6 plus guests! Good luck from my pack to yours! Trish :)

Yeah Trish, that's the answer! Then I"ll have no more mud tracked in! I wonder how much it would cost to have pea stone dropped on my whole yard? Much easier for picking poop up too I bet!

Where are you in Sounthern California?..........I am near "Magic Mountain" in Castaic / Santa Clarita area. You measure off your yard, and want to put it 3" deep, and start your calls. The companies should help you determine how much is needed. It is sold by the scoop, and they deliver!
My text is changing sizes...........I just finished covering the adjoining property that was purchased in March, but didn't have the $ to do that until late summer. Also, I made sure the grass was dead, and covered it with yard cloth before putting the gravel down. With water costs coming up.........this also was a dual reason I chose this ground cover.
You can write me if you have any other questions.........the main ones are:
1). What size yard
2). What size gravel
3). Delivery cost?
4). Cost of gravel per scoop and how many scoops are needed.
Good luck! You'll never regret it.........just tonight, I took the rake and "mowed the lawn". As the dogs play ball and move the gravel around, it's the only maintaining I do..........and that's few and far between! These are a couple of guests on the new lot where I covered the dirt kind of thin. Trish

Just do not plant bermuda grass. If you do you will hate it in no time, and its almost impossible to get rid of. A good playground mix works pretty well.. Scott's brand makes decent mixes, the seed mixture adjusted for various locations/climates.
California pea gravel is different than what they get in the East. its shiny and non-permeable, smooth, hard, easy to get quite clean. I used in in my ex runs in Northern CA for years and was very happy with it. The stuff they get in the East is porous. It comes dirty and gets dirtier every day. Yuck.
Good luck
