Hi there , i hope i am posting this in the right place. I have been an admirer of the Banholz  kennel for many years and would love to have been able to import one to the uk but the time was not right , however whilst doing a search for Gsd puppies here in the uk icame across a website , the lady has a Axel vom Banholz daughter that is liver
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Emma ~ Liver is a recessive dilute gene.  What this means is that for the dog to express ("show") the color, it needs to get the gene that dilutes the black pigment, making it brown, from BOTH parents.  Wherever the dog would have been black (coat, eyes, nose, feet) is turned brown ("liver") -- but only if the pup gets the dilute gene from BOTH parents.  Otherwise, the pup is just a carrier of the liver gene -- holding it but not using it.

The liver parent is obviously carrying TWO dilute liver genes (or she wouldn't be showing) - she got one from each parent.  All of her offspring will carry one liver dilute gene -- they have to get a liver gene from her -- unless you can see that the pup is actually homozygous for liver (carrying two and showing)!

So assuming you would get a black and tan or black pointed sable pup, your pup would be definitely be a carrier for liver, and would only give birth to liver pups if the dogs/bitches you mate him or her to also carry the gene.

Some people feel that one should not breed liver dogs, as the color is disqualifying.

Ema :   Timo  and Uran v Wilderstangerland neither one are liver color....but they produce a lot of liver pups... Daughters and sons of both dogs mentioned have thrown many litters with  liver pups..Mahon on this forum had 4 of them..He has posted the pics and his Sire Zico v Merlin was black /red.
You have to study carriers,,,get the list that is posted on lots of sights...study who is in the bloodline and you will find,,,,a lot of liver and blue recessives in many , many ., many bloodlines.....Can't get around them but you can do some genetic research and some testing...

read all the postings and the threads here and on other gsd sites about Liver pups...

It is a surprise to a lot of breeders...   Jada v steffenhaus has blue gene behind her,,,,,,

the dilution of black is not liver.  its blue.
liver dogs lack black pigment,  so it is impossible to have diluted black on a liver dog.  liver blocks black.

you can purchase a pup out of this dog and still have a strong possibility of it being a liver carrier, and when bred to another carrier or liver dog,  you will get livers in the litter.  Larus Batu is also a well known liver producer.

It is quite obvious this breeder who told you she wasn't breeding it to a liver dog doesn't know about Liver and blue genetics , either.   Health issues she must not know about , also.

Someone posted the list of carriers a few months ago and I cannot find it..the original google post is no good...I have the coat carrier list but cannot find the    Liver and Blue carrier list?????

the liver/blue list is soo outdated.  like 15-20 years outdated.  but most of the popular lines/dogs do carry for the off colors.

you can also find dogs with both the liver gene and the blue gene expressed,  they are called fawns or isabella

lots of nice owners and breeders from the US, Europe, and the UK are on it.
