We had a client ask us about teaching her dog to track and find other dogs. She does quite a bit of fostering/rescue work and once in a while she has an escape. So kind of like SAR for dogs not humans. I know when there is a will there is a way but has anyone here had any or heard of any experiences with a task like this? Frankly I don't think the dog she wants to do this with is a good candidate & think it is kind of a "fantasy" but would like to learn more about the possibility.

thanks!

At one point one of our dogs escaped out of the yard out of a small hole in the fence before we fixed it.  My dog naturally tracked her scent to find her.  This had happened twice, so who knows.  I don't know about training a dog to do that, fantasy? maybe, but my dog did it.

Ok Fox Hounds find foxes they track them down I watched a Neighbor train very interresting , so one would wonder if our dogs can be trained to find other dogs.
This is actually a good thought.

I Don't see a problem, it's about scent discrimination. No? But than I am not good in tracking not my cop of tea ;)

Sure it works (with the right tracking dog). It's absolutely not a fantasy. There's a great book about this called Dog Detectives:

My SchH2 GSD cheerfully and successfully tracked a lost dog once, with no training other than his SchH training.

When I lived on my moms mountain I had a yorky pom named molly that was perfect at tracking my lost / wandering dogs. also i had a few shepherd that would track the dogs .really not hard to train them to do it at all .My yoky mix would take the ground scent my shepherds air and ground.be prepared to do a lot more zig zaging and extra walking as wandering dogs take the long way around every thing. Mostly we would catch up to the pups and little dogs while my shepherds who were wandering always beat me home . we walked alot of mountain for a few years. My shepherd who I called Puppy  (even when she was 13 years old )was a great horse tracker and duck tracker. We walked alot of creeks for a few years both Puppy and Molly would track any thing  they were asked , even wandering kids. Two of the  best dogs i ever owned  !

I had a SAR client use her dog once to track her neighbor's lost dog...

Hi, Thought you might like to hear about Solo's first Track and Find. On the 4th of July, a rat terrier panicked during the fireworks. The next day the owners having heard I had a dog that was in training for tracking stopped us on our daily walk. We used the dog's stuffed toy for scent. Solo took it, held the toy and waited on alert for the command to Zuhk. She picked up the track and within one minute hit the trail. We followed for about a mile when she lost scent. Solo worked a grid and went up on her hind legs, barked once and took off. We tracked for three miles. I thought she was taking me on a wild goose chase. She stopped, alerted and would not move. The little dog was there. He was hiding in the bushes. It took the owners three days of camping to coax the dog out. Solo was 7 months old. They wanted to give us a reward, I told them Solo's reward was to play fetch until I couldn't throw the ball, until I could not lift my arm and until I thought I would drop. Talk about play drive, she lives to work.

I have used one of my dogs to track the other.
I don't think training a dog to do this would be any problem at all.

Yup. Years ago there were two aussies at work, one of which had a tendency to run/wander away, the other was trained to track and find her. :)
