There are a lot of good quality czech/ddr dogs and breeders in the US/Canada. Mostly it depends on what you are looking for. I am assuming sport since you mention competing. Are there any lines you are looking for? Do you want to see the dogs in person or are you just going by word of mouth and reputation?

Van den Heuvel is a great choice, I'd recommend an Orry sired pup, and I've seen more than a few with great potential.

You are not going to get big bulky heads out of ORRY. He is out of Grim and Grim produced average heads to smaller heads and smaller dogs. Pike on the top produced nice but standard size heads.I would go with Chuligan line:

or with 4th blood line based on Titus -> Norbo
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/409047.html Or some others.
Also I would like someone  finally to give me a definition of "DDR dogs".
DDR had been gone for 20 years now . The dogs, all of them,  from their government  breeding program were sold usually  by 5 dogs bunches for few hundred dollars. Program is gone.  The only program following on these type of dogs is done in Czech z Pohranicni straze kennel which also does not carry that name any more. I can get you these dogs from a breeder who created these dogs z Pohranicnio straze Jiri Novotny Or sometimes I have litters here in USA. Now that is if you are talking about the old style DDR  DOGS.  Also my pet pee is that people throw 2 (sometimes excellent) dogs which originated from Czech together and call pups from that  Czech dogs. If they were bred here in USA they are American bred dogs. PERIOD.In order to be Czech dogs people who do such breeding would have to have thorough knowledge of all or at least most of the dogs on the pedigree.  And keep the spirit of the dog which Czech breeders have in their minds.  I would venture to say that there is almost none with that knowledge here in USA or Canada. The proof is what happens to such bloodlines here in USA if such breeders do it for 3 or more generation. You get crap in 99% cases. Best here you can hopehere is that someone buys MATCHED pair of dogs by a knowledgeable person in Czech. But that is also rare since people in Czech are guarding their little secrets jealously. I will do it sometimes for serious breeders.I am sorry that I sound so rough but this pains me. Everybody wants to get on a band wagon of Czech dogs but does not have the knowledge to do it and then produces inferior dogs who give Czech dogs bad name.....

I wouldn't say Norbo produced big bulky heads, except when bred over Gero.  I'll second Jiri's "4th bloodline" if head size and dark sable is your priority, through Gero>Xac>Reno.  Not sure how Norbo fits in the 4th bloodline.

Ox z Jirkova dvora (Reno son, below), is supposed to have a litter on the ground right now.

OX z Jirkova dvora, CMKU/58993/05/08 1.tř.2009-2010, 5JVQ1/P

Paloma od Roubenky, CMKU/53914/04/07 1.tř.doživotně 5XQ1/P

FIŠER Jaroslav Staropacká 83, 509 01 NOVÁ PAKA

Brokered through Jinopo.cz I'd suppose.  Paloma has had prior litters with Jiri's studs Navar and Atila, but is owned by Jaroslav Fiser.  Her Atila litter was also advertised by Prager Hans, so he'd probably know more.  Paloma is a grandaughter of Pollux (Pike sibling), and her head isn't quite so blocky.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything, though.  Like HD, the genes responsible for skeletal head size are many, and expression complex, each attributed with heritability estimates ranging from 25-50-75% in quantitative groups.  For example, Pike von Ehret is likely to be as much or even more substantial than his sire, although his mother is smaller and very feminine.  Even so, his maternal grandmother has a very blocky head for a female, even when she was only nine months old.
