Have you ever met one?  My son and I did the other day, an older fawn pup, oh, about 170lbs, at the moment. What a spectacular dog, especially for big dog pet lovers. The owner allowed my son to approach and pet this amazing animal. He was dumbstruck when his dog washed my son's face with his tongue. It seems he has the honor of being only the 2nd person ever bestowed with full facial affection, a la tongue, by his impressive dog. Said he'd owned shepherds before this dog, and would never go back. I wouldn't go that far myself. I can see a big dog pet person easily falling in love with such a doggy presence as an American Mastiff, the bonus being their good natured grace, without the slobber.

I have trained one in basic obedience, and at 2 years old she still comes to daycare 2-3 times a week. She is one of the dog's in my avatar. Very nice dog & very protective over her disabled owner.

That's what their breed standard emphasized, they are especially protective towards children. Their sheer size would give any one a reason to pause and rethink a threatening act. Since they aren't so demanding to owners for a physically challenging job, I can see why someone with certain disabilities would be a good match with this type of dog. I think someone described a dog like this, "as a rug that licks", maybe so, but I think there is a welcome place in the world for them, nonetheless.

PS: K9 motivation; My eyes are getting bad and your avatar is small, I can't see much detail, but I'd quess the AM is the dog on the far right.
