Mike, "VA" is an abbreviation for Vorzuglich Auslese and means "excellent select". The numeral 4 is the seat (placement) awarded, and lower numbers signify higher-scoring dogs. "V" is an abbreviation for Vorzuglich and means "excellent", and is the group immediately under the VA class.

It works like this: The VA class is only recognized and awarded at the annual Bundessiegerzuchtschau (BSZS) in Germany or at the annual national shows such as the North American Sieger Show (NASS) in the United States. For all of the dogs presented the judge must determine whether any are VA class. This is why some past shows have as few as eight (8) seats or more than twelve (12) seats. At the BSZS there may be more than one-hundred "V" seats -  each assigned a number indicating placement.

The dogs chosen for VA status are supposed to represent the ultimate standard for beauty, correct working ability, and the production of excellent progeny. So, VA 4 is an excellent rating and nothing of that one should be ashamed. The VA 1 dog (bitch) is referred to as Sieger (Siegerin) and the VA 2 dog (bitch) is referred to as the Vize-Sieger (Vize-Siegerin).

Best Regards,
Bob-O
