Has anyone come across a pup that constantly chases her tail.
At times I think she is getting better , but then she starts right up again,
I have a 3 month old female that chases her tail quite a bit.
Any suggestions on what will make her stop.
Distrations , and "fooey!" help, but I cant always distract and yell at her.

Put her in her kennel with a  cow hoof...do not let her chase her tail   Yelling at her and commanding her will do nothing..it is a behavioural habit.... she is bored...she is a high drive pup...she has nothing to do and she wants to chase.  So her tail moves...

Get her involved daily   . When she starts , avoid yelling...get a tug on a rope and let her chase it...wear her out a little  .Put her up and give her a   cow hoof....no toys that she can strangle on....no raw hide as they are choking products also...
'
Cow hooves made in the USA...her little mouth can do no damage to a big hoof..but give her boredom time instead of her tail...put her in a shut down kennel  not an big outdoor one...no room to chase....she will evidentually stop if you address it daily....no more chasing if you provide daily routines of work...she is bored//or he....

Your pup sees a moving tail   she has started so now it is up to you to change the behaviour...Immediately she is viying for your attention and boredom makes pups  dig, chase tails,,chew up the garden hose, or your shoes...keep her contained or working or playing...if she starts the tail chase immediately clap hands, or use a can with dog food in it and make noise...reward her /him to come and reward for her obedience with a tiny treat..one she can eat immed..tiny piece of food.   Put her up and give the cow hoof for the chewing process and to help get her mind off of looking for trouble...good for her teeth and ears..

This kind of a pup requires many hours of playing and training...ball throwing on a string...ball off of a string,  tugs, pieces of pvc cut and on a rope drug for pup to chase....find any and all things to do every day with the pup..keep the pup focused on you .   Have you started her on obedience routines???? Sitz in front of you???  walking on leash...rewards ....then kennel pup to think and to rest...this too will pass after you start a daily play and work routine with this pup....

Tail chasing in a dog that young, if it is CONSTANT,  can be true hyperactivity and a brain malfunction. It may require medication. You may need a true medical diagnosis if it's serious enough, like really obsessive rather than sporadic. I've seen it in severely inbred dogs, like when brother and sister "accidentally" make a litter.

I never have ever seen it like that, as a need for medication...Sure anyone can dope up a high prey dog ..Many people sedate dogs for grooming, sedate dogs for traveling etc..not on my watch...

I have never seen one need that...just do as I programmed or go pay a trainer 1000.00 and they will stop it for you...

I doubt that Hunterhaus's dog is inbred...

Thanks yellowrose for the info.

She is high drive, but she is NOT inbred .

I will definately take your advice.
I have not seen or dealt with this behavior before, so I greatly appreaciate your imput.
I will keep you posted.

I love the high drive   line bred dogs....can't beat them/....~~~~~~   anyone got a  2 x 4?

Had many people pm or email or phone me about chasing tails...it is not an unnatural behavioural problem. So do as I say and it will work.

Go read the thread about  Nationals   and  PETApal??  Thought I would  bust a gut...went looking for my  table saw to cut the computor in half and get rid of    the Peta out of my teeth!!!!      You know the one you fold over and fill with cheese and sausage? after the first bite you wonder if that tough dough was real or a hide...in the disposal it goes, where PETApal belongs.

One of my boys did this as well and still does it occasionally if not exercised. You must let this dog get enough stimulation and enough exercise for her age bracket. Its a game for most dogs ,boredom I guess for others.I remember wondering if it has anything to do with the structure of showlines.I always wonder if its something to do with the spine or something. With what they have done with some of these showlines who really knows what goes on on the inside of these dogs.Anyway in most, the exercise will take care of the tail chasing.Good luck and have a great day.

Don't worry, I know the difference between high prey drive and hyperactivity. But then, I thought everybody here would be USED to normal high drive dogs. :-)
