I found out today that my young male appears to be sterile. This would have been his first breeding- female was ready but he showed not a lot of interest.  We were going to try an assisted breeding (hopefully to give him a clue). They collected him and there were almost no sperm and what very few there were there were dead. He's almost 3 and seems to have developed his male traits. Has anyone heard of cases like this? - he's healthy, not on meds, gets Interceptor for heartworm, usually gets Frontline Plus for fleas. We did use Comfortis this summer once or twice but not longterm. He eats Canidae Lamb and Rice. I'm at a total loss on this one....

Is this the first time he's ever been bred or collected?  If so, then chances are his semen is just "stale".  Now that he's ben collected - have the vet collect him again a couple weeks later - and see.  I'll bet he'll be  just fine.  Studs need to be bred, or collected, periodically to keep the juices flowing :)

Yep - this is his first time (my virgin boy :-) ). The vet has asked for him to come back next week to be checked again, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm just concerned that some factor that I'm not aware of may have screwed him up!

Probably he's fine - it would be very unusual for a young dog to be sterile.  Just needed his pipes cleared out LOL

friend of mine had a VA Bazi son who was sterile.  they tried 3 proven bitches with him, and non took.  tested him and his sperm was no good.  Spent alot of money on this dog, initial purchase, training and titling in germany to be brought back and was worthless as a breeding male.

it is possible.

Did you test for brucellosis? Just a thought.
Always,

The girl was tested and was ok. He has never been bred or away from my house in an uncontrolled situation, so I would imagine his exposure potential would be next to zero.

Have you checked for bacteria from tape worm????  All you need is a course of anti-biotics and to worm him again for 3 consecutive days ... so simple and yet so often the case, i alsl had a female that was mated 4 times and had no puppies, since taking her back to a fantastic vet in Germany she has had 20 puppies from 2 matings!!!!  Good luck !

You didn't happen to just x-ray him in the past week or so did  you??  If so drawing him and giveing a weeks rest then retesting might do the trick.  Wishing you good boucing spermies when you get next checked.

Flygirl:

Malshep is correct to  ask  about Brusecl.... a dog can be born with it....I found this out when a lady brought ,to me a female to breed , two yrs ago...She told me she had used 4 or 5 studs elsewhere and her female had never carried a litter...she had a vet locally who said he could find nothing....I ask for a bruscelosis test and she said her vet turned up his nose.

She took the female to the first vet to ever treat the dog and YES she had it...The vet explained that she could have been born from a Bitch with it and had it since birth and never any symptoms but that they cannot carry a  litter or will have dead pups....no vet every did a brucel..test on her....

I have my male tested and he was negative and I test all my males and my females for safety , even though I do no outside breeding.....after that ..I am gun shy............but I didnt breed so   maybe it is a thought to have him tested when you check the sperm again..

Just my opinion
