My favorite time of the day 4pm, time to call it quits and come on home!!!! I had a nice drive home, hardly any traffic. Open the door and "what is that smell?" I walk up to the crate to let Jake out, then it hit me. Like someone taking a swing with a shovel to my face......followed by gagging and eye watering. Jake was in his crate for 3 hours and in that time he plastered poop of the diareha type all over the floor and sides of his crate.
First, i bring his crate outside and hose it down. Next, Jake gets a bath followed by a walk. I just finished spic'n spanning his crate. Now i have his toys.......is it alright if i let them soak and wash them out or should i get rid of them and get new ones. they werent badly covered at all, but each one had a little poo on them. he had a rope bone, fire house tug and a small tire/rope chew toy. so, should i keep the toys after a good cleaning or throw them away and get some new ones?

From my experience, I'd just wash them and keep them. When they are out in the yard, you'd be shocked by what ends up on toys, so I wouldn't worry a huge amount about them. Just clean them up as best you can, and if you can disinfect with bleach or another disinfectant, I would, but be sure to rinse them out and dry them thoroughly before you give them back, unless they are rubber toys..
Just my opinion, but dogs aren't usually overly picky about such things.

The rubber or other toys of that nature I'd wash thoroughly then the rope toys I'd replace. JMO

Hey this happened to me today too! I sort of had the sinking feeling at work, since Nikon was squatting this morning (probably all the treats on his tracks this weekend). Sure enough, came home to a crapper! And I have wire crates so not only did he blast himself and his crate, but the carpet, the wall, Coke's crate.... then we have to get a tarp to make a path from the crate to the door.
My carpet has needed a deep cleaning so I swore the next shit bomb I came home to, I was getting out the deep cleaner. I had to skip my conformation class, but now my carpet (and walls, and dog, and crates...) are clean and smelling fresh.
If the toys are hard or rubber, I soak them in a bucket of water with a little bleach for a day or so and then rinse them well. Ropes or anything soft gets tossed.

I have had LOTS of experience with this issue...........
I have 5 dogs, 3 are shepherds........one cannot tolerate grains, one cannot tolerate table scraps, one that cannot tolerate both another cannot tolerate too much fat. One has a cast iron stomach - except for sympathetic symptoms....
if any one of them pukes, so will she...
We whent throught a lot of testing to find somehting that all the dogs will tolerate. If I give them table scraps, I can expect a smelly house. If I feed raw at least three will get sick. My dad is the worst, he just has to give them treats every time he comes over.......grrrrrrrrr!
The dogs got to the point where they could shoot the stuff out their crates and I ended up having to pull up the carpet....
I do yard duty twice a day, disinfect the patio, crates, floors and the toys go into the dishwasher or are soaked in 10% bleach for a half hour twice a week or when things "blow up". We have had a whole month of "good days". It's a record. Oh, we've been going to visit mom and dad without the dogs
.
Keep searching for the right combination and good luck.

I would not leave toys in the crate, my personal opinion.
Shit happens.
Most things can be cleaned.

I'm lucky with Oakley, I guess. I've never had to clean up a mess in the crate. But one day, my girls had messed with the front door of the crate (I was using the side door at that time), and Oakley got out in the middle of the night. Needless to say, when I woke up because I heard her pacing in the kitchen, I found that she'd done a puddle in the kitchen and a big pile on the carpet...It was easy to clean up, but still, the smell was...intrusive.
Oakley's stomach is pretty good, with the Kirkland food I've been feeding her, I get nice, solid piles that are easy to clean up, so it's not a big deal. Most nights now she sleeps in the utility room, and I've not had any accidents in a very long time. She's pretty reliable. But in the event of an accident, I'd just use plenty of bleach on the floor and her toys, and then we'd be fine.

SitasMom, your situation sound like mine. My dogs aren't sensitive to food, but I think we have more poop issues due to exposure. I train at several different clubs and have had dogs come in with kennel cough and giardia, Coke goes to the dog park, Nikon goes just about everywhere, dogs go on vacation and to beaches where the water isn't always the best...and now with Nikon's tracking lord knows what crap we are walking through (or he's eating along the way). We've done fecals here and there and the only time I've ever had one come back with something was my foster dog who had whips (and it was obviously from her condition). Since then I use a heartworm/de-wormer pill that also kills whips. My dogs are otherwise very healthy but we've had more poop messes than most it seems. Know the phrase "the shit hits the fan"? Yeah I know what that's like! I don't sweat it though. Honestly my dog's poop really doesn't smell that bad compared to some things I've smelled (an infant with diarrhea, anal glands, etc) and it's just an excuse to really clean and sanitize the entire area.
I took Nikon to work with me today b/c I can't get home to let him out, but so far he hasn't pooped or peed. Go figure.
