I have seen many other types of breeds ie bostons, pits, corgis and dutch shepherds lay in this position but I have never seen a german shepherd was wondering is this normal?

LOL, I don't know what "normal" is (other then a hip rating....) but I have sheps that have done that too. Sometimes the cold ground feels good on their belly. There is a yoga stretch for humans called "Cobra" that is a similar position that feels great on the lower back & I bet it feels good for the dogs too. Pugs & Frenchies are famous for that pose too....

My GSD puppy Sam does that. I even got a photo of it. He does it to stretch out. So the puppy is most likely just stretching out. Mines a sable like the puppy in that photo, so maybe it's something that sables do more.

It's not exactly the same pose, but it's close.

I raised a GSD pup for about 9 months that did the "froggy" down a lot, she did it less as she grew up. I have also seen it a lot on golden, labs, and english bulldogs.-

Puppies have an easier time at being frog dogs, then do adults, they are more elastic. With all the falls and spills they take they need to be elastic.
Always,

I think it is pretty common in most breeds :-) I don't believe it has anything to do with the color of the dog. I have seen it in most breeds including mixes.

I've seen some do it, especially in grass during the summer, I do think they like to cool their bellies.

I had a Yorkie that would kneel.  When she'd sit, her knees were on the floor and her legs behind her, strangest contortion I've ever seen.  I always said she must have been catholic, all that kneeling.  By the time she was 11, she didn't have a tooth left either.  Her tongue hung out and she knelt, that's what I'd call strange! LOL

My 2 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier lays like this more often than not. It seems VERY common, if not normal, for the breed. Her hips are excellent and her patellas normal. I think for her it is just more comfortable. My GSD boy doesn't do it however, though I'd venture to say that position is way more comfortable for girls than boys...for obvious reasons. SBTs are lower to the ground than most breeds. They are wide and short so for them it is probably easier to do this than lay in a "normal" position. Any GSD or similar breed probably just does this out of a personality quirk. Chalk it down to individualism.

GSDtravels, As a dog groomer I see so many toy breeds with hardly any teeth left and the tongues hanging out. Those small dogs teeth do seem to rot out quickly, poor babies. My one year old male chihuahua just had 8 teeth surgically extracted. Some were baby teeth that never fell out and a couple were just plain nasty. All my young chihuahuas all are on a toothbrushing schedule now! Sorry to hijack the thread...

I'd say that has more to do with the little dogs  getting soft dog/human food  than them being a small  dog.
