Hello GSD fans!  I would like to get your opinions/experiences on any issues with feeding a raw diet. I have a lady who bought a puppy from me a few months ago and she has had nothing but problems with the puppy having diarrhea.  The cause of the diarrhea is clostridium.  She feeds a raw diet and the diarrhea has gone away with every course of antibiotics- only to return again once she finishes the course.  The dog is gaining weight, happy and rambunctious in every other way.  No other intensive testing has been done as of yet, but the vet and I have suggested trying a dry diet to see if it helps the situation.  The puppy's owner is really against doing this and sees it as a complete failure to the puppy.

Is it true that a raw diet may not be for everyone?  I believe that your dog will tell you if what you're doing is working in their behavior, coat, weight and normal stools.  Your thoughts?

She's not feeding enough bone, and is probably feeding too much fat.

If the pup  was actually diagnosed with clostridium overgrowth,  then it might be better to put him on a quality commercial kibble for a while until his system repairs.  If this was a best guess situation by the vet, then I would be inclined to agree with VomMarischal.

I will give the suggestions.  She cares for this puppy better than most people care for their children!  I really couldn't ask for anyone better to raise one of my puppies.  Its just difficult to get her to understand the change may only be temporary.  As I said before, she believes she failing the puppy by having to feed anything else.  Thank you!

In my opinion, she's right!
Tell her to get some whole chickens. Feed according to size, half a chicken, a whole one, whatever.  Peel the chicken first, because sounds like the puppy doesn't need the extra fat, but DOES need the bone content.

I had the same problem with my puppy. The breeder had him on a raw diet and highly encouraged me to keep him on it so I did. However, he had soft stools and diarrhea every day. I took him to the vet who said they found a trace of bacteria but that he was otherwise fine. I tried all different kinds of meats, bones, veggies, etc. and he continued to get the soft stools/diarrhea. I finally decided to try feeding a dry food. After trying many kinds (Innova, Solid Gold, etc.) the only one that worked was the Royal Canin Large Breed Puppy. He's been on it for over a month now and is doing perfect with normal stools.
