This is the puppy I wrote about in an earlier post, black but with lighter markings. Only just got round to getting a photo - difficult because he is mad and will not stand still, but it does show his markings. He will be 4 months on November 5. I think he will be quite impressive when big, sort of wolf-like! but not sure if these markings would be considered faulty?

I don't think he is "black" but instead, he is a very, very dark sable.

I agree...looks like a VERY dark sable to me. He is gorgeous.

Hard to tell from the picture...but it almost looks like it's undercoat coming out that you see as a lighter color...

Thanks for the comments, I realized after posting that the original message I posted was on the german shepherd board so I posted the photo there as well at the end of the original post.................
The father of the puppy is a showline sable (Timo lines) bred by me, this is his pedigree www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/551100.html. the mother is not registered here but is solid black - also from show lines though. I have quite a bit of experience with sables but none at all with blacks. The puppy was given to me in payment for the stud service, I took him for a friend, the helper who works with our dogs, he wanted a black puppy for work and show. So I do not now own the puppy but I see him every day. He has outstanding temperament and I am sure will do well in work, but I am not sure if this colour is acceptable for show?............................
I am sure it is not a sable as the legs, feet and back are solid black. He has not finished changing his coat yet and in the areas of the neck that are lighter are still somewhat fluffy, but the stripe from the shoulders down does seem to be the definitive coat. Interesting to see how he develops....

I can see how that color could be a GRAVE disappointment to you. Please send the puppy to ME. Immediately if not sooner.

Very interesting markings! I'm going for dark sable but I would love to see more pictures as he matures. I've never seen a pup or dog marked like this. Please keep us posted.
