I'm about to buy a dog from overseas. How much are the import fees in the US? Are these fees constant or a percentage of the actual price of the dog?
Thanks,
Thanks,

It all depends where you dog is coming from. They may have to drive the dog to the airport and charge you for gas. If the shipping company has to pick up the dog it will cost you more. I usually pay between 600 - 700 Euros for shipping.

I was actually referring to the import fees once the dog is in the US. A friend told me I have to obtain an import license and there will be fees for each dog imported. There are two dogs one coming from Germany and the other from the Czech republic. I will pick the dogs up from the John F. Kennedy International Airport. Has anyone been through this?
Thanks again,
Thanks again,

I helped a friend import a dog and I went to pick it up....came in from Slovakia....just make sure that you tell customsthat it is YOUR pet and that you paid an amount under $3,000 (I think that is the magic number) and I think customs fees were about $10 and then I paid Lufthansa $35 at pick up. The dog was flown into DFW.

I have just imported two females - one arriving 3 weeks ago and one arriving last night. Because I have imported dogs before I had to obtain a broker, but it really depends on what mood the US Customs office is where you go on that particular day. I know of people to be lucky enough not to have to have a broker on multiple dogs imported , but that was not my experience. The base price for the Broker to clear the dog is around $147. My broker says if the cost of the Dog is more than $2000 then there is an extra fee of $50. There may be a storage fee of $0 to $40 depending on what airline you use. Lufthansa charges $35, my last two came in NW Airlines and they did not charge me a fee.
I have used three different brokers and Ellen is the least expensive of the three.
The broker I use is Ellen Chance, an incredibly nice lady who knows her stuff and is very efficient.

I also used Ellen Chance a couple of weeks ago on the recommendation of this board. She was superb. I had a previous experience where I did not use a broker. Customs gave me the run-around. Took me 7 hours to get my dog. Ellen is well worth the $200 or so you will spend per dog. I got the dog and all paperwork completed in about 45 minutes.

There are no custom fees. Sometimes customs make you hire a customs broker. No rime or reason why. If it is first time import, "dog is a pet", it is a direct flt and purchase price shown / declared value is $2000 or less, then you may not need custom broker. However I recommend to spend $150+- on custom broker. That would be your only fee. Oh,.. there is sometimes Airport fee of about $35.
I also recommend Ellen Chance: 404 766 0207. PM me if you need help. I can guide you through the all process. of shipping.

I imported a dog last spring--to DFW and I was told to tell them the price was under 2,000. I had to pay customs 30.00. She was from Slovakia and came here via Lufthansa and I didn't pay them anything.

I'm importing two working dogs to breed. They cost around 9,000 dollars each. How much do you think I will end up paying in custom fees? And how do they calculate these fees anyway?
