My three-year-old dog had his first #2 accident in the house this weekend.  I came home a couple of hours later than usual and took him out on a walk.  He tried to eliminate many times to no avail.  When I came home, I found that he had eliminated in the basement and while I was cleaning that, he exploded diarrhea twice in the living room.

When he has diarrhea like that, he usually freaks out by the door, but not this time.  I'm worried that now that he has done it inside, he may do it again.  After using four different cleaners, the smell is finally gone, but I'm afraid that the "marker" smell may still be there.

Is there a specific deodorant to neutralize whatever marker smell may be left?  And now that he's done it once, would it make him less likely to alert me if he has to go?

Thanks.

Simple Green is an enzymatic cleaner, should eliminate any trace if you use it properly, follow instructions on bottle.  Also, do not let the dog watch you clean the mess, it will bring more attention to that spot and he will go back to investigate.  Put him up while you clean and make sure the mess is cleaned as well as  possible.  If it is in carpet, it will be much harder to remove.  I have a feeling he didn't do it on purpose if it was that loose, he may just not have been able to hold it and that shouldn't contribute to more of the same behavior.  I'm sure he's sorry, they don't like it once they're trained and it is usually very upsetting for them.  Have you looked into why his bowels are so loose?  Does he possibly have a medical condition?  If it continues for more than a day, I'd take him to the vet.  Good luck.

Also, do not punish the dog, he will not know why he's being disciplined.  If you catch him in the act, that's different.  But do not punish after the fact, he'll have no idea why.

It must have been something that he ate, but he's fine now.  I was just worried that he did not alert us like he always does.  I used to have a bell on the door that he would ring to alert us, but the cat started abusing it so we took it down.  :)  I put the bell back on the doorknob yesterday.  Thanks for the advice.

Well, your cat must be a real ding-a-ling  Sorry, I couldn't help myself.  You're welcome.

It happened again yesterday when we weren't home.  I took him to the vet right away and he had a small accident in the crate on the way there as well.  At least it does not appear to be a behavioral issue.

The vet was puzzled because besides a grumbly gut he could not see any other signs, but he gave him a shot of penicillin and gave us a week's worth of tablets which will restore the useful bacteria in his digestive system.

I'll just have to put him in the kennel when we're not home for the next couple of weeks.

Topli, sorry to hear he's having more problems.  I hope you get to the bottom of it and he's feeling better soon.  Keep us posted.

When a dog has diarrhea the best thing to do is starve them of all solids for 24 hours to allow their system to be totally cleaned out. The first couple of feeds should then be something light like chicken and plain boiled rice. A good blob of honey added also helps a great deal with upset stomachs.

As GSDtravels mentioned if it persists go see the vet.
