Does anyone have any updates on the JRD situation? I cannot find any information at all on the Videx sight. I would have thought by now after everything Videx claimed we would have the latest updates. Was JRD not as common as he once thought? Or is everyone too scared to talk about it? I just can't believe that everything has gone so quite on this subject, someone must have some  information. After all JRD is so prolific in the breed, if Videx is to be believed, is it not?

Our GSD breed could be sitting on a JRD "time bomb" - time will tell

As someone who was very involved in the JRD problem when it first came to light I thought I would give my update.  My 'A' litter which produced 3 carriers, 3 double carriers and 1 clear have progressed well with the exception of 2 of the females - both carriers.  Both of them have had to be put to sleep with Malabsorbtion which although does not appear to be connected with JRD does come up when googled as one of the associated problems that can be linked along with several others with JRD.  It goes without saying that both these females have been replaced from JRD tested clear stock and we wish their owners a long and uneventful life with them.  I can only be grateful that we were able to find these problems before the animals suffered too much and for that I can only thank David Payne for his help and support at the time of the initial tests.  I am also thankful that only one of my current breeding bitches was affected (now aged 6, speyed and living with my daughter) and that all other animals in my kennel tested clear.  It was a heart breaking time and I wouldn't wish the same problems on my worst enemy so I would urge anyone who has any doubts to do the test and live with the results. If anyone wants any further information please feel free to pm or email me.

I do not want the GSD to become one of the "most notable breeds effected with this disease" - It has become a very prolific disease in some breeds, so much so, that when they find a "clear" it is the exception, and they want to avoid "homozygote" diagnosis, because this means BOTH genes are mutated and ALL offspring from such a dog WILL be "JRD carriers". (all animals have a "pair" of each gene in their body, one from their father and one from their mother)
Several "JRD homozygote" have been found in GSD here within the UK.

Those who have lost a GSD with 'kidney failure', or own a GSD suffering with kidney failure, should consider the possibility of JRD - and have parents and siblings JRD tested.
Those who have a GSD that has whelped a number of 'still born' puppies, should consider JRD testing the parents.
Those with GSD suffering from 'Malabsorbtion' should consider testing them for JRD.
Those breeders who have 'kidney problems' within their GSD breeding kennel should JRD Test ALL dogs in their kennel and trace and test all suspect offspring. Future identification of "JRD Carriers" will identify "carrier lines"
I can simply sit back an watch it all unfold. I have done all I can, and been pilloried for it, as usual in our breed.
Hide or ignore JRD, and our breed will become riddled with JRD. Wise breeders GSD will remain "JRD CLEAR" - and it is so simple to be one of them.

No comments from anyone with first hand experience of this JRD?  Other than the ramblings of the mad man nobody seems to have had any problems, could the mad man have been wrong all along?
