You have to be impressed even if you are not familiar with ring sport and don't totally understand what is going on.

If you do understand what is going on, it is even that much more impressive.

Unbelievable

Awesome video!  Yes, impressive.

Malshep what would they be looking for to take away points on the dog?  I saw there was one Mal  that looked as though it was a little hesitant.  Points would be taken off for that, yes?

in french ring the dog loses points for every second he is not on the bite. so the longer a decoy can keep a dog from bitting the more points the dog will lose. In ring sports it is really about a decoy vs. the dog. The decoy in the video is really good. He exposes alot of dogs weaknesses and poor training.

Thanks Maliguy,
Then, there was a dog in the video which would have lost points I think.  It looked like he didn't want  to enagage at 2 points.
If you know which dog I'm talking about. But then he re-engaged.

Does the helper get critiqued as well during thiese trials?  If so, does anyone know what that helper got?

There were some unsafe periods at times as well.  Once the dog is on the decoy, the decoy is not allowed to lift all 4 feet off of the ground.  Spinning with the dog in a circle is allowed, but no "swinging".  Once the dog gets within 1 meter of the decoy, the judge's stop watch begins.  All bites, with the exception of the Defense of Handler (10 secs) and Guard of Object (could be momentary) are 15 secs.  After the allotted time, the judge will signal the handler by "tooting" a horn (usually a bicycle horn), that signal is for the handler to "out" his/her dog.  It is not a signal for the decoy to stop fighting.  By rule, the decoy will continue the opposition until he hears the "out" command from the handler.  Once the decoy hears the "out" he is, by rule, not supposed to move, another flaw in the work on the video.  Decoys at big events will take some "poetic license" in that they will try and "block" the dog from biting with either their hands or the baton (split bamboo).  As you saw in the video, if the dog has not been taught to bite both legs and arms, he can be blocked from one or the other.  A "leg only" dog can be blocked from entry, each second the dog is not biting once he is within the 1 meter area, is costing him points.  Each time the dog transfers a bite it is considered at least 1 sec of no biting.  The decoy can keep the dog away with a barrage of the the baton but "technically" is not allowed to touch the dog until it is biting.  Then, he can strike the dog with "glancing" blows as many times as he wishes during the "timed" biting.  Esquives (escapes) are allowed before the dog engages or as he is in pursuit.  Five esquives is usually considered excellent work and will bring a roar from the crowd!!  Slow "outs" are penalized heavily, if memory serves me correct, 2.5 points for each second.  Being as the decoy continues the fight until he hears the command, there is no time to clear the dogs head with a lockup.  Slow outs will kill 'ya.
