I have a 10 month old pup that keeps chewing my walls and trim even though she has chew bones all over the house AND I have sprayed the No Chew spray all over the walls/trim. She has moderate drives. On the other hand, my over the top and very high drive male has NEVER chewed the walls or trim. I really wonder if this sort of behavior is something that ever truly leaves? Is this sort of dog ever trustworthy, even at an older age?
Most of them grow out of it. The chewing walls thing bothers me. If you are feeding junk dog food they chew wood. If a dog chews up a Redwood patio set, deck, etc., you can almost bet they are eating Puppy Chow. Not sure why...
No Puppy Chow here. I feed a Lamb and Rice food with a meat base and steriod free. This same chewer also will chew anything else besides walls, including screws, metal, plastic, etc etc .. list goes on and on. No amount of chew bones seems to curb it.
You are just going to have to be patioent, and vigilant about anything you don't want destroyed.
My 6month old male also eats wood, sticks and anything he can get his mouth on. He doesn't even chew it really because I see it all in his poop! Thank God it all comes out! I can't even put bedding in his crate now as this day it's new and the next it's demolished. The stuffing is everywhere. He's only in there for 3 hours in the day and he has bones in there with him.
I also want to add that he eats Wellness Core Fish mixed w/Merrick can
Could your puppy be lacking in vitamins or minerals? Have him checked at your vets. The food your feeding sounds reasonably good so if your puppy has the all clear from the vets (blood test etc) and is not stressed by enviromental factors like noise, other dogs etc then you will have to be firm and patiently teach him what is acceptable to chew and what is not. Exercise him physically and mentally as well.
Hope it goes well for you both.
Try bitter apple, you can find it in the pet stores. put some on his tounge and the on what you do not want chewed. That will give you some relief on some of the things he is chewing on. I have one at home, still can not put any material in his bed or he will shred it. He gave up on all the other stuff. The puppies are so cute, we forget it is like having a baby in the house. Need a crate, just like you needed a play pen. He has no business running free without being watched.
Sorry, wife speaking ... will delete to not confuse anyone.
Ramage,
How much time does your dog spend in the house?
How much time alone?
What have you done in the way of corrections, or discipline regarding this behavior?
Unless the dog just likes the taste of your walls, I see a nervous problem that should be corrected.
There are not enough details about the dogs daily life to know anything for sure, except that is has nothing to do with food.
Diversion requires some effort, much more than just a bone or chew toy, you need a plan.
Moons.
