Does anybody track during a light rain?  If so, does it affect the dogs much?

by Bob McKown on 05 October 2009 - 14:10

You should track in all sorts of conditions cause you can,t control the weather.

by 4GSDK9 on 05 October 2009 - 14:10

Tracking when the ground is wet is the easiest for dogs....I have heard that some people will "wet" their dogs noses with water in dry conditions before setting out on a track......Just make sure you dry your dogs REALLY well afterwards if you track in rain/snow/wet conditions.

Makes no difference to the weather unless of course it is thick snow, Rain makes no difference,
Take this as an example
The WUSV will be tracking in a couple of days time the weather forecast is rain unfortunatly for best part of the week so the Dogs will have to Track do Obed and Protection regardless of the weather, its part and parcel of the Sport I hope however the forecastrs are wrong as they usually are if they try and forecast more than one day aheadm A lot of people will be travelling a long way and i hope it stays dry for them for they certainly deserve a Good Show
By the way we tracked the two Dogs this morning it was raning hard when Goran was tracking we all got wet through but he did okay so getting wet was worth it

Thats what I was hoping to hear.  Trials are held no matter what the weather so you may as well get the dogs and yourself used to it right?

by TessJ10 on 05 October 2009 - 14:10

Yes, I've tracked in light rain and heavy rain and the dogs worked fine.  A light rain often helps scent.

Think of a hound trailing a fox.  They can track through all kinds of weather conditions.  A little rain won't bother the ability of a tracking dog.

Next question.  What kind of rain gear do you guys weat when you train in the rain?  I thought about some Frogg Toggs, but I'm not sure.

by RONNIERUNCO on 05 October 2009 - 14:10

I ALWAYS LIKE TO WEAR FROG TOGGS ON FIRST DATES.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and we track in the rain a good portion of the year. :-) We wear regular rain-gear (waterproof jackets.windbreakers/windshirts) and, often, waterproof pants. The pants may be lined or unlined (depending on temp) or the kind that you pull over jeans. All can be found for good prices at Cabelas and similar retailers. I also have a rubber poncho with a kangaroo pocket big enough to hold the line, artticles and bait. Footware: Wellies, Mucks or Bogs. They are waterproof, warm, and comfortable. AVOID overshoes, unless you intend to combine tracking with strength-training for your thighs.

The Temp was okay about 7degs Centigrade so i did not wear much just trousers and t shirt, cap, and my training boots got wet through but easy to change when i got home i do not like to be weighed down with wet gear unless it is winter of course that is different
Izzy Bitch did not seem to be bothered by it only wanted to get after the bait my brother had laid down for her
Goran like most Shepherds take the weather as it comes
