I am helping a friend import a dog from Germany and wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations on a broker to use in Atlanta? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I just received a  girl last night imported from Germany. I used Ellen Chance  of Jean D. Duncan Customs Brokers
TEL (404) 766-0207
FAX (404) 767-0016
CEL (678) 522-0604

She made it a very easy, stress free experience. The cost was excellent as well.  I will deffinately use Ellen again for my broker needs.

Honestly, you DO NOT need a broker.  You can clear the dog!  I have imported 3 dogs this year and never hired or paid a broker.

This looks like a baited question to me.

But if you are serious, use Ellen Chance from Jean Duncan. Do a google. That is how I found Ellen.

And regardless of what anyone else experience is, I prefer to use a broker.

It is a 200 mile drive for me and I don't want any surprises. Have used Ellen twice and things were perfect both times.

Here is the link.

It clearly states that there is no duty on purebred breeding animals either.  If you search on their site it will show you that no broker is needed even for breeding or competition dogs.

Hello and many thanks to our customers! We could not do it without you, and I thank you all for all your kind comments!

The caveat I would offer to Mr. Hall is that the issue is not duty-free treatment. You are absolutely correct, dogs are unconditionally duty free. You are also correct that purebred breeding animals are also duty free. Personal pets do not generally need a broker, either. See here for a list of purebred registries

http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&rgn=div5&view=text&node=9:1.0.1.8.66&idno=9#9:1.0.1.8.66.0.84.9

The issue is that duty free treatment does not exempt one from needing a broker if the importer is recognized BY Customs as someone who is doing importing for substantially commercial purposes (buying and selling). You won't need a broker, until you do. This is US Customs deciding it, not you the importer.  Each port IS different in how Customs chooses to handle animals coming into the country, and what basic procedures are relating to the CDC Rabies reporting requirements. If Customs ever decides against you, however, you WILL have to find a broker.

Best wishes
