Red Sable

Breeders/sellers;

I don't want a dog to go up to and lick everyone like a long lost friend. I'd like them to ignore others.  I've had one like that.   I could take him anywhere, but he never paid attention to anyone- but ME.  I didn't have to train him, he was born that way.  IMHO that is  what a GSD should be, and what we should strive for.

But -I see it all the time, a GSD that is social. I thought they were supposed to be aloof? Please tell me why a German Shepherd should be social? Am I misunderstanding the word?

I believe a dog that is aloof, is social.

If he was anti-social he would be agressive towards others( dogs and humans).

Just because he doesn't kiss everyone to death doesn't mean he isn't social. If he is aloof he is reserved, will make friends on his terms. He is observing IMO.

PS How about AN UPDATE ON THAT CUTE LITTLE RACOON YOU HAVE!

I keep hoping our girl will turn "aloof" and "tolerate" others.  Right now, everyone is her new best friend.  She wants to say "HI" to any stranger and is ridiculously happy to meet someone a second time.  I'd much rather she be like this than anti-social but a little aloofness would be a great thing.

A dog who has learned to tolerate other people and dogs, who avoids bad situations. The whole meaning of socializing your puppy from a young age.

My boy is not overly exuberant when meeting other people, but I like him to be friendly.

Hi Ninja, thanks for the reply.

Roxie  is growing up!  She lives outside, a free agent, but she never ventures far.  She still hangs out with the dog, and now a rescued kitten we have.

Wow has she grown!! She looks four times bigger than the last pictures you posted. LOL

I see she still likes humans and the rest of her adopted family.

Thanks for posting a recent picture of the little masked bandit.

Ronnie, LMAO

As usual you are correct!

I suspect you are also guilty of the same crime. LOL

ME AND DINKIE HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO STALK A CHEERLEADER OR TWO.  I HATE THOSE RESTRAINING ORDERS.

To me a social dog just means the dog is confident in general and understands the difference between a threat and a regular person.  The dog can still be aloof, just not fearful or overly aggressive.  The dog might not come right up to you, but wouldn't have a problem with you coming up to it.  That's what it means to me.
