I was at home today when the neighbor's two dogs a were loose and one attacked our long loved rabbit.  I hear my dogs barking and looked out to see my big guy looking at the gate.  As I opened my garage i heard another dog barking.  As i came out of my garage I was met with a yellow lab barking at me and running a circle around me.  I went to where I heard the other dog barking and it was underneath my rabbits cage trying to get her.  I ran to my door and knocked to get my dad out and then went to the owner's house and knocked there.  I knocked so hard that it opened her door.  As I was screaming and cuss at her to get her dogs she told me to help her by getting a leash on her dog.  I replied with that they were trying to bite me and she needed to get them.  She went back in her house and I ran back to mine and got a baseball bat.  Then I went back to my rabbit defense as the other dog was still trying to get her.  I trying to hit the dog but the rabbit's cage was in the way and the dog didn't care.  I moved the cage and had the dog trapped then.  By this time the owner finally showed up and got her dog.

I called Animal Control and the only thing they could do was make a report.  Which I had them come out and do.  This is not the first time their dogs have done something to my pets.  Back in 2006 they pulled our toy poodle through the fence and chewed him up to where he almost dies and two years before that they pulled another rabbit through the fence and killed it.

I was wondering if there was anyone on here that knew of something legal or a scare tactic I could do.  I'm tried of my pets getting eating up by their dogs.  They have no control of them.  Animal Control can't do anything.  The only thing they told me was to call them anytime the dogs were loose and that if they attack me or my pets I do have the right to defend myself even if I have to kill the dogs.  I was hoping to get these dog deemed dangerous but they have to maul or kill a human first.  The lady also rents the house so I was wonder if I could go after the landlord.

Any help with this I would appreciate.

My rabbit did suffer a torn toe on the front paw and a toe on the back foot that is hanging on by just the skin.

Next time make sure that you brake some bones with that bat. If that would be happening on my property the other person dog would get seriousely hurt. It's not fair to your dog. If that would be me I would just realese two of my alfa bitches I am surre that would work faster than anything ;)

I suggest pepper spray - and not the "novelty" type that is sold in department stores and auto supply stores. I suggest that you acquire a couple of large cans of MK-4 that is manufactured by First Defense and available in most gun shops or firearms supply outlets. It is really vicious stuff that will saturate, not just contact, a target from a long distance. Trust me, it will immediately change the direction of a redneck who is hell-bent on showing his ass or an errant dog who is showing his.

You have a fence, so that is the legal boundary and the first line of defense. Me? I would reinforce the fence so that the neighbour's dogs could not stick their heads through it. If the dogs came on to my property, I would confront them first with the pepper spray and would have the trusty 12-gauge pump cruiser on my shoulder as a backup. The baseball bat will work, but you must get close enough to strike, and you may get a nasty bite.

I love dogs and would hate to seriously injure or kill someone's dog, but I will not allow my personal property or livestock to be damaged by them. Forget about the effectiveness of Animal Control in this matter, as their best effort seems to be the harrassment of kennel owners who maintain their facilities and dogs in a correct manner.

I am not suggesting that you shoot and kill the neighbour's dog(s) as it is very dangerous (and often very negligent) to discharge a firearm anywhere people are less than one (1) mile away from you. I presume that you are not inside the boundaries of a city? If this is the case, speak to the Sheriff and obtain his thoughts for what must be done. He may send a deputy Sheriff to speak to your neighbour in an attempt to "educate" her.

In many rural areas, rural common law applies and the dogs can be rightfully shot dead if they trespass with the intent of harming other animals. But that is an extreme move and has its own inherant and serious consequences. Your neighbour is irresponsible - write her off as a negligent dumbass as she will not improve with time. She probably thinks "oh well, dogs will be dogs". Yes they are and will be, but we humans are 100% responsible for their actions.

Bottom Line  - reinforce the fence, and acquire some MK-4.

Best Regards,
Bob-O

Put some pebbles in a pop can and shake it loud and hard at the dogs. It will startle them enough to get their attention so you can shoo them away and save your pets

Take the bunny to the vet and give the neighbors the darn bill. If they do not pay it take them to small claims. When they get tired of paying, they will control thier dogs. It is not the dogs fault, so shoot the owners. Also Pepper spray, this could cure the right now, but make problems for you long term, they will now associate you and "hurt". Had a neighbors dog get out all the time and chase the mailman, mailman used peper sray, now the dog spent years trying to kill that one mailman.

Has anyone heard of using Wasp Spray instead of Pepper Spray?

Thank you for all your help.  I do live in the city and they are my next door neighbors.  We have gotten a better fence it is vinyal.  This time the rabbit was on the side yard where she has been for three years.  I like the pepper spry idea.  I was more of the lines yesterday thinking of my dad's 22 rifle.  But I will probably go and try to find the MK-4.

Here you are allowed to destroy an animal attacking livestock, I suppose that includes Rabbits.
A short barrel, or open choke shotgun with bird shot will not carry far if you are trying not to kill the animal or harm others.
Don't know where you are at but most places have some sort of law concerning leash laws, predation and so on.
Dig into your local laws.
Talk to the dogs owner.

I'm so sorry for your troubles... I know what you're going through.

In Texas these dogs are labeled "predators" and may killed by the owner of the animals that are the prey. As long as you do not violate laws or ordinances that is..... Many other states have a similar view on dogs......

A neighbors dogs killed my chickens, I called the police they made a report, said there was nothing they could do.
I talked to the owner of the animal, they said "not my dogs".

They killed my can on my front porch, I called the police they made a report, said there was nothing they could do.
I talked to the owner of the animal, they said "not my dogs".

They killed my sons' pet rabbit, I called the police they made a report, said there was nothing they could do
I talked to the owner of the animal, they said "not my dogs".

They tore up my horse's hocks and face, I called the police they made a report, said there was nothing they could do.
I talked to the owner of the animal, they said "not my dogs".

By this time losses incurred by those two dogs came up to approximately $2.350, in vet bills and loss of livestock.

I pretended to go to work, waited with a 22, the minute the dogs came to kill again, the minute I had a good safe shots, I shot, dropped them where they stood. Dug a hole and buried them.

They called the police, they made a report and  said there was nothing they could to.

Its so unfortunate that dogs have to pay for crappy owners.
