What age do you retire..NULLIFY your Top Bitches?? - Page 1

    When do those that compete, consider your females..."No Longer an ASSET" to your agenda?????

when they are no longer producing healthy litters, or the females health is suffering.  I've seen quite a few females being bred at 10 yrs old by "top" importers.

I've had 1 accidental litter from a 10 yr old female, all but 2 of the pups were still born.
generally 7-8 yrs old is my limit, sometimes before if a female doesn't do well with litters or has rough pregnancies

It truly depends on the bitch:  If she is producing well, if the numbers are average;  if she is a good mother;  All these factors need to be considered.  I have had 2 year old bitches that did not deserve to have another litter as they didn't really like it;  or they had an extremely hard time whelping;  I have had a bitch at 8 l/2 years old that had 11 puppies;  loved every minute of it and would have done it again;  I have had older bitches get in the whelping box with their daughters that didn't really know  what to do with 6 screaming puppies and try to nurse them;  It really depends on the bitch, her health, her progeny, her love of the puppies;  some bitches really do not care to be mothers and make it usually pretty clear to their human moms.  All of the above really counts, different breeds also.

Still you must consider the bitch first at any age.

I usually retire my bitches at around 6.  I reckon if I have not got what I want from her in 3 litters, either she is incapable of producing it or I am incapable of finding the right stud for her.  May always be exceptions though.

I always spay my females at 5-6 years of age. The reason is that they usually start to have those little precancerous ball bearings around those nipples. I think 6 years is good enought. I agree if you can not get what you need out of them why keep breeding them. Give them a good retirement home. I just placed a 5 year old with a family and I get one more litter out of her then call it good.

Ok  One of the important things is the breeding record that tells you if the bitch had normal healthy deliveries, being NO complications and she did not show signs of stress.  Also she is easy to produce enough milk without showing signs of stress feeding puppies.  Several things have to come into play here. 

As far as genetic tumors, they are and that bitch should not be bred into later years.

Ask a veterinarian please that is a specialist in reproductive physiology.  You can ususally find one at any Veterinarian College.  In Ohio, we are fotunate to have two real experts.  You can learn a lot and save yourself and dog, and keep everyone happy and healthy.

I WOULD tend to believe,that a bitch was gone past thier usefullness is when they start selling their ass's for their next hit of CRACK ,..or when they start to associate with the OTHER BREED'S,.. not of their kind ,..so to speak ,..or when their upkeep outwiegh's their WORTH ,.OR ,.when they "BITE THE HAND THAT FEED'S "
