I was asked to find an importer to get 2 puppies for a friend. After looking around we did find one. We paid him half in advance for the 2 pups. Both pups did arrive. 2 brothers. Puppies arrived on Wednesday @ 2am in the morning. So we cleaned them and fed them. At 6am we found that 1 puppy hadnt eaten and seem thinner than the other, so we immediately informed the exporter.
This puppy had developed a loose motion within the course of the day and now is been treated twice a day the veternarian. The exporter is now asking for the balnace money. We told him that one puppy is very sick and is been treated. We have vet receipts for this puppy.
What should we do in this instance?

I know that most people are going to say not to pay the balance, but he keeps harassing by sending SMS's/ text messages and calls.

What does the vet say is wrong with the pup?

by crhuerta on 25 September 2009 - 02:09

This is just my personal opinion......
I would inform the exporter that the minute the vet gives an "all-clear" with the puppies....you will send payment minus the vet costs....(if the puppy's health is seriously in jeopardy.)
If the puppies are being treated for something like giardia or coccidia....that can be pretty common with "imported" puppies....if that be the case.....then I would send full payment for the puppies....no problem.
Keep all vet receipts, make copies and send with payment.

What  does the vet says that was wrong with the pup?Was it coccidiosis? I am just asking because that is sometimes the case. A lot of dogs/pups carry it and have no problem. But if they go through the stress of the shipping the immune system gets stressed out and the pup may get sick. Thus it would be the result of the shipping. Thus if the pup would be coming to you from across the street than it would not get sick because the stress would be minimal.   Now whose fault would that be? In this case I would as an importer split the cost of the vet.
But there is no intelligent answer possible until you tell us the diagnosis from the vet.
That would tell me  if the dog was sick from his original home or during transport or from your home.
LEGALLY I believe you must pay for the pup and then seek payment for the vet. These are two different things. You can make then agreement with the importer or take her to court. But legally that would be the way to go. If you do not pay her she may refuse to honor her warranty, If there is any, and that is another thing. What does the warranty say. Every state also has different laws about this.

In any case I'll point out that you will want to come to some kind of agreement about this with the exporter. They have money laid out for getting and shipping the pups to you. They may still be owing someone else money or be out of their own pocket in this deal. Don't just ignore them and not try to work with them. You could find yourself right back here an a few months wanting to know what to do about papers you haven't gotten yet.

Thanks for the advise, vet says its tick fever. I dont believe so. I think its corona as my other boxer puppy - 5 weeks old also got the loose motion a day later. he is doing better now but not the GSD.

From all the research on the internet, it looks like corona. The smell confirms it.

by DKiah on 25 September 2009 - 10:09

There are specific tests to determine all the things that could be going on.. bloodwork for tick borne diseases, fecals for coccidia etc.. corona usually affects pups at about 6 weeks or before surely these pups are older than that!
Parvo has a very distinctive smell and spreads like wildfire...... all parties need to gather and share more info

Seek the opinion of another vet - and fast. I've never heard of a diagnosis being made without taking blood and fecal samples. It's no good saying "I think it's corona" - you have to know for sure. Please don't waste time on the Internet - find another doctor and do the appropriate tests! And I agree with the above posts which tell you to stay in touch with the person who shipped you the puppies, this is very important.

If the one pup is fine pay the man. Then I don't know, if the other pup is going to pass/or be in serious health issues ask him to wait on that balance for another 24 hrs to see what is going on.
But, really you can not just not pay him.
I understand being careful but I am sure he might be thinking you are scamming him. He isn't seeing the pup as you are.
I would fax him the vet sheets, but you need to get the vet to determine exactly what is wrong. If the pup is just jet lag, then pay him immediately and don't drag your feet.
I have imported pups in before and we have to keep our dealings on the up and up so that it will be an easy process.:)
Hope the pup is going to be okay and that it all works out soon.
