Hi, I have a 3 day old puppy with a 60 degree angle (bend) in the tail at approximately 1/3 way down. It looks like puppy was stepped on and the tail is healing at a bad angle.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Cindy

can you splint it for a few days?
is it broker or dislocated?

take it to the vet

might be dislocated. tail was fine on day one. I worry about the vet... infections.

if this is a vet that you have a been to many times, ask the vet to do a house call, or if he can check the puppy in the parking lot..

I would wrap the tail and take it to the vet. How else will you be sure about what to do?

by gieske on 24 September 2009 - 16:09

yes, we have a vet that does house calls, but she is on vacation until oct. 10th. -:).

Thanks for your input, I will call another vet today.

TAKE THE PUPPY TO A VET !!

Had a similar thing happen to us.....2 days old...bent/broken tail......(no problem).
He has a "bend" in his fluffy tail now, but he uses it just as any other puppy does!.....no pain...just wiggle, wiggle wave!!
Vet said...not much can be done.

I acctually purchased my first female with a broken til, almost a 45 degree bend, you can only see it when she sits and holds the tail out.  My vet said it was more trouble to straighten it by re-breaking and splinting (break was old and had healed, must have happened in the whelping box),  but I think with the softer bones on a young pup, it might heal striaght if it were splinted.  However, mom may have other ideas and it could be a loosing battle and do more damage than its worth.  Worse if mom bites the splint and tail off effectively docking the tail.
