Hi guys. I wanted to know how old is a female when she starts to turn gray/white around her muzzle, and at what age should she be when she should no longer be breed. A relative of mine called and asked me these questions about a GSD female. Although she is not titled, her background from her parents on back are titled.
Thanks

I have a SchH3 female who started greying at 1 1/2 yrs. old. The greying is a separate gene, as is masking. I also had a bi-colored czech import bitch, Bena od Volfu, who had no greying at 13 yrs.
The age limit on breeding a bitch has many factors involved. Condition, quality ( structural, pedigree, work ethic, titles), and mental age. Some dogs are aged at 6, some not until 12. Breeding an older bitch also depends on previous breeding. If the bitch is aged and maiden, I would not breed her. Many bitches have difficulty supporting a male, if not in top condition. My SchH3 bitch is almost 10 (Nov.13, 1999). She is presently bred, however, she is a bitch who has an outstanding pedigree, work ethic, hardness, trainability and has produced very well. She had no problem supporting a very large male. IMHO, for any bitch to be bred, they should have the abiltiy to better the breed. With every breeding, there is a calculated risk of the bitch not producing milk, puppies or the entire litter dying, the bitch killing the pups, the bitch dying, c-section, etc. Lots to think about, even breeding a bitch with everything picture perfect. Then there are the puppies to sell into the correct homes..................it never ends! It takes love, commitment, and dedication.

Age eight, last litter. Dogs are not machines.

8 years old, or into their 8th year depending 100% on the condition of the female. Never into their 9th year - by then they are living on the couch eating out of a crystal bowl, deciding the play/sleep schedule and enjoying their earned retirement.

How is litter size affected by age, or is it?

by Davren on 23 September 2009 - 13:09
"The age of the bitch can also affect litter size. Not surprisingly, very young and very old dogs produce smaller litters. The age of the bitch when she has her first litter induces an impact. When a bitch is 4 years old or older when she has her first litter, her litters will be smaller than a younger dog. With subsequent litters we see an overall decrease in litter size after 5 years of age in the majority of breeds. We expect the first litter for any bitch to be smaller. Litter size will increase with each litter generally through the third, sometimes the fourth litter. Then the number of pups decreases steadily."

Oldest bitch we ever had whelp was 9....offered to us ALREADY bred in Germany. The owners asked if we would like to give her "retirement home after she whelped"...and we along with the co-owner did. She gave birth to 7 beautiful, healthy puppies.
SHE was by far, one of the very best mothers we have had. Absolutely no problem whelping, tons of milk...and the instincts of a pro. She was never bred again....she lived with the co-owner until she died at 13.
I believe this female only had a total of 4 litters, "including ours".. in her life time.
I personally believe it totally depends on the health, condition & litter size of prev litters...when deciding on breeding "senior females".

My 11 1/2 black female has no more "greying" around her muzzle than she did at 6 months of age.
