my trainer told me i should get a bait bag or a training vest.  obviousley the vest has more pockets and function, it also costs alot more then the bait bag. would it be worth spending the extra money to get the vest to train my GSD or would a bait bag surfice?  i checked out the products from leerburg, any other good places to get these training aids?

EITHER WAY JUST BRING PLENTY OF WILLPOWER. I ALWAYS END UP EATING ALL THE BAIT BEFORE THE TRAINING BEGINS.

I saw someone using a mesh fishing vest.  Lots of pockets, looked more professional than a bait bag.  Actually, it looks really sharp on her, and it's lots cheaper than a SchH vest.

I have a few vests but my most favorite of all is the Gappay summer weight vest I got a couple months ago.  You can find them at a number of places such as Hallmark:   http://www.hallmarkk9.com/gappayactivevest.aspx  I got the black one but they also come in beige.

Each of the bottom front pockets  have a removable nylon lining which velcros into the pockets for easy clean up.  There are 4 top pockets, 2 with zippers, each big enough to hold  a medium sized ball if you want.  There is a velcro strap on the left shoulder which you can use to hold a tug or a ball.  It has huge back pockets too, big enough to hold just about anything, a tug a whip, whatever.

I machine wash it in cold water on the delicate cycle using Woolite and hang it dry - easy peasy!

You guys make me look like a cheapskate. What do I use? A simple carpenter's nail bag that can sometimes be acquired for no cost, provided you buy enough lumber and/or nails. Stylish and cutting-edge? No. Effective and low cost? Yes. They are washable, but can be tossed if they become really grimy.

Best Regards,

I bought an excellent vest at Academy Sports for $20.00. Big front pockets for bait/toy, breast pocket for ball/toy and back pouch.

Try to get a longer hunting vest as some of the fishing vest are very short and it takes more movement to get the bait in and out.

A pouch works just as well, get 2, one for bait and one for toy/ball.

They are convienient and look cool, but I have a friend who has trained several dogs to Sch. 3 and doesen't own either.

I used the nail apron (99 cents at Lowes) and it works as well as anything.

I was going to post more, went back and read RR's post and had to dry my keyboard out. He has to be Larry the Cable Guy in his day job.

Bob-O,

Great idea!  I just might try that.
I saw on the leerburg website, a training vest for $119.00.  That's alot of money for a vest!  I'll go elsewhere.

I have a carpenter nail belt (Had, more like, don't have it now) but I WANT a vest. The bait bag didn't work for me because I almost never wear a belt. Clip on bag came off or bait fell out when I bent over. I don't want the one with the ball launcher because the dogs learn to pull the launch cable...

Vests really aren't all that expensive when you consider that if you take half way decent care of it, one can last you a life time or damn near.  I pay more for my tennies and they only last a year or two.
