I know I can buy one online, but does anyone know of a store that sells them? I am concidering getting into AKC Obedience and need a book that can help a newbie like me.
Also, what books on beginning AKC Obedience would you recommend? I was thinking "Competition Obedience: A Balancing Act by Judy Byron" might be a good one. Any other suggestions (or opinions on that book)?

Not exactly. I am looking for books on competition obedience. I want to get started in AKC Obedience, doing trials. Just wondering if there were any stores I could buy those types of books in, or if I'll have to order them online. So far I've checked the Barnes & Noble's near me, as well as Border's, and several pet stores. Is there any other places I haven't checked that sales those types of books?

Thanks Mickey. I'll check that information out (:

Franquie, the big box stores stock pet training books as a rule. Dogwise is a very good source for serious dog books. You might want to find the AKC club in your city (or closest city) and contact them to find a trainer or someone who has titled dogs (doesn't have to be shepherds necessarily).
Go to the AKC site and click on "Events" and do a search for upcoming obedience trials in your area. Go to at least one, preferably more, and talk to people. Most are friendly and willing to help someone interested in the sport.
UKC obedience is very similar to AKC and offers another avenue for you and your canine friend. It's fairly simple to register your dog with them. Their website is: http://www.ukcdogs.com/
Good luck,
Micky

Yeah, I intend on finding a trainer to work with, but I want to at least get started on the stuff I can do alone with her first. I will definitely check out the AKC clubs near me though, and see when the next next AKC Obedience event near me is taking place. Thanks Mickey (:

There were some great videos that broke down every excercise in every ring I watched back when I got started. I can't find them online to save my life, but I'll message the friend I borrowed them from, the maker of the videos also had a book or two, as I recall.
Start with a rule book. It'll be your new bible. You may want to consider trying rally first, its an easy, upbeat, fun introduction to AKC events. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have, pm me anytime.

Thanks KCzaja (: I had concidered Rally as well, so I will look more closely into that and decide which I am going to do.

You can do both Rally and Obedience. Actually, if you do Rally first, pretty much all you have to do is get the dog trained for the stays (stand for exam, long sit and long down). A Rally Excellent titled dog should score in the high 190's easily in Novice.
