Hello,

I have heard that Pfizer Vanguard is a good brand, can anyone recommend anything else?  Also, does that come in 5-, 6-, 7-, 8-, whatever- ways?   If so, is it safe for puppies or just adult dogs?  Where would I get these shots from?  My local feedstores carry one brand and I can't even find the brand name on the packaging.  I know that puppies get vaccinated starting at 6 weeks, then 9 and then 12, but do I use anything different?  I think a man at the feed store said I would start with the 6-way, then the 7-way @9 weeks, and the 8 at 12 weeks.  Where do you get the puppies shot records?   Do you get them from your vet to fill out when you vaccinate them, or do you order them somewhere, or do you just draw one up yourself?  And for the puppies first deworming, what do you recommend?  Do you recommend a commercial wormer or something natural like garlic?

Thank  you,
Haley

This is what I followed - schedule for vaccinations :
http://www.doglogic.com/vaccination.htm     Jean Dodd's Vaccination protocol

At 6 weeks the pups are still utilizing the maternal antibodies and the vaccination will be fought off, therefore useless.  Wait til the pup is 8-9 weeks for the first set and every 4 weeks thereafter.  I would do only a 3 way vaccine and then  rabies at around 6 months(or according to state law), separate from any other shots, waiting 2 weeks at least from the last set.

I second using the Jean Dodds vax schedule, but note that it  has been updated since 12/05 - it was updated in 2008.  Link here:

As for deworming.  Don't waste your time with garlic.  That's not going to get the job done.  Nemex 2 is the best I've found.  You can order it on line or often feed stores carry it.

Here's a link to a pdf you can print and keep your own records:

Or you can buy record books.  I know Valley Vet sells them:  http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=30e07f7a-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5

If you are not experienced with shots, please spend the money on taking the litter to the vet or else use a VERY EXPERIENCED BREEDER to assist you.

Are you giving sub-q or IM shots?  Do you know the difference?  Do you know why some are one way and some another?

Not saying you don't know all this, but.......

These questions are best asked of a veterinarian you trust, and not of strangers on the internet.  And not everything you look up on the internet is factual.  In this economy I know that a few of the vets' offices in my area have started "clinic hours" in which their prices are lower.  You might want to ask about that.

If you are inexperienced enough to be asking these questions, the best thing you can do is get professional medical advice from a GOOD, PRO-BREEDER VET - they can be hard to find.  Learn there and then take that knowledge and grow with it.

Hello,

No I do not know the difference between sub-q or IM shots.  I am VERY inexperienced, but I am trying to learn!    xD

Thank you all for responding and thank you for the links.  I will ask my vet about it, but I won't see her until the end of March probably and I was wondering about all of this now.  I would still like to know what everyone's preference is for wormer.
Thanks,
Haley
