How do you deal with it? What did you use that did or didn't help get rid of it, how long does it take to show signs that it should be clearing up? Recognizable symptoms of it aside from losing fur?

Search the old posts, there are plenty on this subject.....

Go to vet, get stuff, follow directions.....

Find out why dog's immune system is weakened......

I rescued a doberman a few years back that had it so bad she was nearly all bald and swollen, especially on her face and legs/feet. It made people cry just looking at her. With some help I got financial assistance and brought her to a vet who perscribed daily oral ivermectin treatments. Now maybe for some dogs that is not the best solution, but the vet told me that in her case we needed aggressive treatment and drastic measures. Either that or euthanasia. I chose to do the treatments. All of her fur grew back with a good diet and tons of love and stability. As little stress as possible in her life. She was shiny, happy and healthy, but I won't lie, it took a long time. A few months. She had been starved and beaten, so very stressed when I got her, which was likey a good part of why her mange got as bad as it did. But it usually can be cured if you catch it early enough. I would get some opinions from different vets and see what they say!
Good Luck

My son's French Mastiff had it as a puppy, The vet put him on daily Interceptor (same medication that is used for monthly Heartworm prevention)  for 3 months, along with weekly baths (don't know what they used). The dog orginally had bald patches on his body, but he was never itchy, although they caught it very early.  The dog is now 100% cured.  I imagine Ivermectin would be cheaper to use.  Ask your vet about the Ivermectin used for horses, as the cost is much lower. I wish for you the very best.

Stacy,
I applaud you for rescuing that poor Dobie and for saving her life.

Thank you. He will be going to the vet within a few days. He has not actually been confirmed with it, but from what I have read it seems pretty spot on.  He has minimal hair loss around his eyes and is very hairless in between his back legs and sparce on his back.On the bright side, where he was previously having very flakey skin that has cleared up amazingly and has less of an odor from the borax/water/peroxide mixture I have looked up and bathed him in. His fur seemed to have made a stopping point as far as growing back, but it has made a significant difference as far as I can tel  but some days it seems better than othersl.  But he will definately be going to see a vet within the week.

Here is the worse area currently

Char thank you. She was in such bad shape. After a week I realized that she HATED people in hats. So I ended up holding her on the couch, while wearing a hat, and peeting her, talking to her and feeding her treats (she was almost as big as me lol) She ended up loving people in hats hehehe
Also they did give me medicated shampoo adn also some cream that was applied daily.
I lost most of the pictures of her on my old computer, but I have a few from when I first brought her home. The picture had been cropped and made larger so the quality is very poor, but here are a few of her.

Lukas, I hope you don't think I am hijacking your thread. Just want to share to give you some hope for your dog :-)

I will open another thread with before pictures. I don't have any after pictures of her. But I can assure you it ALL cleared up and her fur all grew back :-)

He needs skin scrapings from the vet to confirm demodex. Your vet should scrape a couple different areas and don't be alarmed if he bleeds a little bit from it. One of the worst things about demodex is getting the secondary infections cleared up.
He looks bad, but I've seen a lot worse.  How long has he been like this?

Yeah I know. He's has had his skin scraped befor but it came back with no results of mange. Which was about 3 months ago. So with it seeming to be more apparent now they may actually get something. It's hard to say because it has come and gone over a couple of months It's just now gotten to the point where it seems to really bother him and he's scratching and gnawing a lot..

FYI his skin isn't THAT red. I think it was just my camera but it makes it look worse than it is.
