This past January, I applied for and was accepted for possession of what I believed would be a Belgian Sheepdog. Having bred and owned Belgians for about twnety years, when I picked up Simon in New Jersey, I realized that he wasn't a Belgian. This was confirmed by the veterinary paperwork which followed. It identified Simon as a GSD mix. I let the BSCA know of the identification problem, but decided to keep the dog anyway, due to his history.

Simon was found wandering around the town of Orrum, NC in Oct 2008. He was malnourished and in need of medical treatment for heartworm, ticks, etc. including several character problems.
In July, the results of his DNA test showed that he was a purebred GSD. The herding instructor believed that he was a DDR or Chech, and comparing him to pics of DDR/ Chech dogs, he is a dead ringer.

Simon is about 24-25" at th withers, long, black coat with a mix of sable at the rough and legs with a white chest and skirts; and weighs about 70lbs now.

The rescue vet determined that he was about two years old and gave him a DOB of 10/24/2006.

Does anyone know of a possible breeder (reputable or not) in the area of Orrum, NC? We would just like to know how a dog two years of age could not have any training and be abandoned.

Just to let you know, Simon has taken to his new home in MA, is spoiled rotten, and is very obedient and adjusted. He will be going for his Pre-trial in Herding next month.

Is this close to Orrum? http://oxford-northcarolina.olx.com/german-shepherd-puppies-czech-ddr-lines-iid-11806112#pics

Further, there is a husky breeder in Orrum: http://www.domesticsale.com/user_211001_JoshDaniels.html  You could ask him if he knows of gsd breeders in town.

I'd love to see a picture of Simon, do you have one?

The DNA testing done without sire and dam are not accurate as far as identifying breeds. I'm not saying that he's absolutely NOT a purebred, but those tests just are not 100%. Good Luck with him! It sounds like he has a wonderful life now :-)

First, I want to thank everyone for their responses. I checked to see if Oxford, NC was near where Simon was found and it wasn't. I figured that Simon could have been on his own for a month or two. He has a high prey drive and could have chased a deer into the woods and became lost. This could mean that he was originally located up to 100 miles north or south of Orrum, NC.

Stacy, I agree with your opinion of the DNA testing, but, I have attached a photo I used for the AKC ILP application. While they cannot test for lineage, the companies can test for general identifiers. Simon's parents could be any combination, but appear to be GSD. The markings around his eyes seem to be very similar to those I have seen on websites for DDR/ Chech GSDs. Two websites: www.forevergsds.com and www.ddrgermanshepherds.com are two which have similar dogs like Simon. Both have dogs whelped at about the same time as Simon. The one characteristic that could be seen as a fault is that he carries his tail high, but then he is a high energy dog, and the wind blowing excites him.

My purpose in finding the breeder/ owner is to determine his parentage/ pedigree. My major problem is that what breeder would come forward to claim him, and then admit that they sold him to someone who neither trained him nor claimed him after his adventure?

Thanks again for your responses.

I hope you can find the breeder or owner. Was he already neutered? I was just wondering maybe one of the local vets in that area of NC may recognize him. I know most vets see a lot of dogs and can't keep track of them all, but maybe at some point someone was looking for him they may have asked around. The local shelters there may be of some help too
Again, Good Luck!

Stacy,

Simon was rescued in Orrum and brought to the county vet in Lumberton, NC where he was neutered. The Rescue org. already tried to locate the owner, but to no avail.

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that if you adopted from a shelter or rescue you have legal title to the dog, though not necessarily the right to his paperwork if he is a purebred.  Shelters hold dogs for a specific time before they can legally adopt them  or place them with a rescue.   You can get ILP papers from the AKC for titling in AKC events, not sure about Schutzhund or other sports. You might check out that route if you can't find the Breeder.
