What is the average speed of German Shepherd dogs?
Also, what is the maximum speed of German Shepherd dogs and how long can they maintain this speed, in terms of time or distance?
What is the trotting speed of German Shepherds? How long can they maintain this trotting speed without getting tired?
Will running on asphalt get them tired faster than running on hard-pack sand or soft-pack sand?
I have done a research on wolves but I can't get specific answer!
Note: I am referring to a health dog who passed his AD with ease.
Thank you,
Mike

Mike,
I have "clocked" my K9 (GSD) at 31 mph chasing a toy. I used a radar gun. Another K9, also a GSD hit 32 mph as a high speed chasing a toy. The average trot when returning with the toy was an easy 26 mph. The dog was not really exerting himself at 26 mph. I think I could have gotten my dog even a little faster. He hit the 31 mph on a 200 yard sprint. I clocked some other shepherds at a high of about 27 mph and a trot of 22 mph.
I need to bring the radar gun out for some courage tests and down field hits. It would be interesting to see the speed on a courage test.

Wow Jim, that is really interesting, and faster than I would have thought.
I train horses, and 30 miles /hr is a two minute mile.
For a dog to trot effortlessly at 26 mph is amazing too!

Thank you for taking the time to reply, Jim!

Clocked them with a radar gun, eh?
Being a police officer does have its advantages!
Ronnie...LOL!

Not to be contentious but i dont believe it.
The worlds fastest man runs 28-29mph
No GSD can trot at that speed. Trot is the 2nd gate-walt, trot, canter, gallop. Gallop or fast canter yes, trot no.
Id also say a GSDs top end is closer to 34-35mph on a sprint.
Just a hunch, no radar, but an auto we clocked my Gsd at moons ago.
Greyhounds stretch out to 42-44mph which is cookin

Would this be the same radar gun used to write tickets.....LOL
That does sound a bit fast for a trott.

Ok, trot may be the wrong word; I thought that after reading Red Sables post. The sprint - all out run, ears down flying for a toy was 31 mph at a high for my dog, 32 mph for a different GSD. Two other GSD's not police K9's were around 26 mph at top end. The run (not trot, I stand corrected) on the way back, was 26 mph on average for my dog. An effortless run returning with the toy. We did this 4 or 5 times in a row, I think I would have had better speed if I hadn't thrown the ball over a split rail fence causing the dog to slow before jumping.
The radar gun was calibrated and accurate. The other GSD's that hit 26 mph came back at 22 - 23 mph. I have been told a mali was clocked in the mid 30's. We did this on a soccer field, the sprint was probably 100 yds. My throw was off a couple of times causing my dog to turn and not get a straight sprint. It wasn't easy to be beaten by 1 mph by another K9 guy.
It was very interesting for me to see that the top end speed was not considerably different than a run. Only by a few miles per hour.
Red Sable since you know horses perhaps you could give me the right terminology for the sprint and run.
I am radar certified, but I don't write speeding tickets. It's been a few years since I have written any tickets. Tickets haven't been in my job description for a long time. I also speed, always have and probably always will. I drive fast on the highway and I don't want to be hypocritical so I always gave lots of breaks to speeders. I would pull a car for 82 in a 55 mph and if a warning would suffice I gave a warning. Now, I don't use drugs...so if the occupants of the vehicle have dope the traffic stop takes on a new meaning. Then you get a ticket or go to jail. You see criminals don't obey the law and they rarely obey traffic laws. I have made tons of arrests of wanted felons and lots of really nice dope arrests from traffic stops for speeding. If you are licensed and polite you get a friendly warning. I don't give lectures either on traffic stops.
I plan on bringing the radar gun out again in the next couple of weeks to clock some courage tests and downfields.
I hope I cleared up the confusion.
