As I move closer to getting my pup, I am doing the obvious new dog owner thing and thinking of names. I plan on doing conformation, tracking and obedience with this dog and I wondered what everyone's opinion of proper syllables was?

1? (Max)

2? (Fluffy) ... don't ask. ROFL

Etc?

I know with commands you want 1 syllable commands that you can quickly give. Are names the same? Or should they be a bit longer?

Thanks guys!

Don't sell a dog short. Our dogs' names are 2-3 syllables, they have no problem learning or responding to their names. Call your dog whatever makes you happy.

I agree with KCzaja -  dogs are very smart, in addition to their call name, all of our dogs (6 shepherds, 1 min schnauzer, 1 Rat Terrier Mix) have at least one nickname and they each respond to their call name as well as their nickname(s). Have fun with your pup!

For God's sake NOT Max!!!       You call his name out at obedience classes and all the Dobermans and Rotties will come as well!

I love thinking of names for my dogs :-) But like Spruell said, my dogs tend to have nick names too. I prefer the 1-2 syllable names, but it really doesn't matter. The Name Picker on is site is awesome, have you taken a look there yet? There are a lot of cool names in there pick a letter you like and there's a big list. Good Luck with your new pup
