I should finally be recieving my 6 month old GSD puppies AKC papers in a couple weeks. I originally wanted to get her ear tattooed just in case (God forbid) she ever got lost it's more likely she will be returned (because obviously a dog who is tattooed has an owner). She is also microchipped and wears a collar with an ID tag all the time.
What are your guys' thoughts on getting an older puppy tattooed?

I wouldn't bother with the Tattoo........a chip is much, much better........as long as you pay the service.
With a tattoo, its not always easy to find out were the dog came from, with a chip, the agancy can tell you where the dog lives.
collar and tags are good too.

I think I must have the one time fee type of chip. I have never heard of needing to pay anything for the ones my dogs have... I hope thats correct /:
I was thinking the tattoo might just make it more likely someone would take the dog to a vet/shelter to get the dog scanned, or make some effort to find her owners rather then keep her if they see she has a tattoo. Maybe my logic is flawed though... It definitely wouldn't be the first time haha! :P

I would do both, if it were my decision. Mine are both tattooed and I plan on also microchipping them also. If they ever got lost or stolen I would want as many possible identifiers as possible. I will also do the same when my new pup gets here. Just my opinion :-)

The big difference in an older pup is that if you're going to do an ear tattoo it might be best to tranq or sedate them for it. So if you're planning on haveing her spayed have it done @ the same time. Ikon is tattooed but not microchipped, and we do plan on having him chipped. He's way too precious to us to risk loosing.

Yeah I am having her spayed in a few months and I didn't even think about having it done at the same time... That is a fantastic idea haha. Sometimes I wonder why I don't think of things like that :P

I had a 10mth old one done, he soon forgot about and has never had a problem with me touching the ears.
Do you not have a National Registry of Tattoos in the US? just going off Sitasmums post, in the UK if a dog is found with a Tattoo it only takes a phone call to find the owner, providing they keep their details updated, but that would be the same with chip anyhow.
