many breeders will be coming back from germany and i would like to know if the germans allow handlers to virtually choke the dog when running round the ring, a common experience which i witnessed in the shepard ring in todays scottish kennel club show, indeed such was the poor standard of one particular so called "proffessional handler" who reffered to one of her charges as a "bastard" it seems to me that such behaviour towards such a biddible and noble breed is a common factor which to me if tolerated puts egos before the welfare of the breed

Dunno how they show in Germany or if it's different than the USA, but my dog and the dogs in the shows I've attended are always shown on a "dead" ring, meaning that even though the Fursaver is a "choke" collar, it cannot choke the dog.

some of the dogs i seen(not all) were obviously stressed, licking their muzzle and displaying a worried looking expression

Hi Keeno,

Most good handlers show their dogs ,using the dead ring , as Liesjers mentioned. However  as the G S D is a working dog  , they are trained to pull ,to show fitness and enthusiasm for work while they are walking and running. (that is why we have double handling.) this causes the  leash to tighten ,as in most cases the  handlers cannot keep up. If trained well
the dog will know when to pull and when not to.

Please note this is different from the way they handle the dobermann ,where the leash is held vertically.

thanks sonora but the dogs i seen were not on a dead link or even a fursaver which liesjers mentions, the dogs i seen were on  a thin short linked choke chain which was actively choking the dogs. The dogs i seen were not out in front puling, instead the handlers were running next to the dogs and appeared to me to be choking them in order to keep their head up. As well as small linked chokers some dogs were also exibited with thin cord like leashes which done the same job as the choker, it was not nice to see, however appeared to be acceptable practice. Both types of chokers could be purchased at the show, however despite looking i did not see anyone selling the fursaver chain you mention. ive since been told by a friend who prieviuosly showed shepherds that what i seen from some of the handlers was an old english way of showing which is very different to the system of handling and showing you mention. The old style handling is barbaric and to me further discredits the kennel club who obviously condone it.
