DebiSue

I received an email from a friend who was appalled that I was working my dog in Schutzhund.  She couldn't believe I wanted to turn my dog into something vicious like that.  So I attached this video to my reply to her with an explanation of the "sport".

Not sure why it didn't hi-lite.
This is our neighbor, Jake and Echo.

Echo looks like he's ready to attack at any second. Yup he's tearing that kid appart . Good for you thats a great video showing how mean your training your dog to be. LOL  People are so simple minded.

Well, that slobber froma SchH trained dog can be hard to wipe off.  They give kisses ferociously.

What can you say except most people are stupid.  Nice video.

Calling them stupid is being easy on them. Dog's don't bite people, people get other people bitten

Dogs aren't the problem, DebiSue...It's the people who don't know how to read them and understand them that are the issue.

It goes back to observation. If you don't observe an obstacle and trip over it, who's fault is that?  Not the obstacle you tripped over.

I read a dog's body language.  I was terrified of dogs for much of my childhood, and have learned to get past that fear by watching the dog, not running from them.  As a result, I am a very happy dog owner and a somewhat successful trainer (I have Oakley doing nice stays now!!!!!)

Have fun with gorgeous Echo!  She's a gem.

It is  called    VERY UNEDUCATED PEOPLE

We have many of them   TEXAS

How about a truck and two patrol cars,,,with great big signs on them that say   Caution K-9  on tailgate,,both doors...parked in the parking lot of local convience store....We had just come from training at park in Humble....went in store to get coke and chips......while in store  several  parents of kids complained to store clerk..".whose crazy dogs in those vehicles."..AND TWO WERE   SO  PATROL CARS AND MINE WAS A TRUCK      1 TON WITH THREE CAGES CLIPPED AND BUNGIED.

In a few minutes a man came screaming in front door......those dogs attacked a women in parking lot and she is on the ground...."     DUH     Two dogs in patrol car and mine in the truck...

An older woman saw the dogs barking so she wanted to see them closer...SHe walked between my truck and the patrol car and the parking lot had holes in the concrete...veru uneven... She jumped when the dogs saw her and they immediately went into barking mode....all of them....we were parked away from the front door on purpose....

WOMAN fell on ground...sprained her ankle and said the dogs did it...as she yelled to customers.....sure they jumped out of the cages...unlocked the patrol doors and got back into the car,,shut the doors and locked them......rebungied the three cages,,and put the cow clips back on the doors.....

The result of this incident was a threat to sue the HC SO and the store owner and me for causing her to fall into the hole in the concrete besides my truck and the patrol cars.....and injure herself.......Cars and truck clearly marked.....and not anywhere near her path to the front door of store.....she went over to the parked vehicles to be nosey and look closer for her own knowledge put herself in the hole in the concrete by her tending to other than going into the store..

You never know what or who or when , people think the DOG  is the cause of their headaches or more............I 'm sure Slamdunc and others can tell some tales also.../

I hate to be the gadfly, but I don't think the general public is wrong in their perception from the outside that people who like to train their dogs to bite people are just a little bit frightening.   It does appear creepy to people who don't know it from the inside.

I do think once you get to know SchH people you discover we're not a bad group of people -- but we are not saints, either, and weare not, actually, altogether normal.  Somewhat right of center politically, individualistic, and a tad selfish when it comes to social programs.  Red State-ish even in the Blue States.  Read your own commentary on politics -- some of you guys are pretty far right on the political continuum and you like it that way. But we are not as a whole completely outside the social norms, I don't think.

I also think that if you took 25 randomly chosen untrained big dog pets and 25 trained SchH dogs and put them into a variety of situations it is -- I know you hate to admit this -- probably going to be the case that the SchH dogs are going to bite MORE often than the pets (unless you set up shy-sharp situations with submissive stimulii).

I think what actually redeems SchH dogs is NOT that they love their families or kids, although that's true, and of course wonderful to see.  It's that their owners, like responsible gun owners, recognize their inherent danger, and keep them out of situations that could get people bitten.  I think SchH people are so much better at this than regular folks that SchH dogs are less likely to bite people than regular pets.  But it is not because the dogs are really all sweethearts and don't bite. It's because people who train dogs understand their dogs and the risks so much better than other folks that they take more than enough precautions to make their dogs actually safer than the average big dog untrained pet.

So I think the PR should be about the responsible SchH dog owners, honestly.

The dog and kid in the video, and their relationship, are beautiful, of course.

by happyday on 28 August 2009 - 13:08

I dunno Bucko - I think I disagree with the outcome of the biting on the 25 dogs - schutzhund dogs vs non trained dogs.  There is always the exception on the Sch. dog I guess - but in my experience in standing next to a trained schutzhund dog and a pet dog - I have seen that pet dog be  a bit nervy and try to bite and the schutzhund dog - more able to cope with a group of people or indvidual..... But I do believe that the general public looks at the little cute pet as not a threat and the big old GSD a threat - just cause they are GSD.

Personal experience: my weiny dog  will bite you real quick -people that come to my home say, "oh how cute" and will try to pet him.  While they are intimidated by my two GSD and are afraid to pet them.  Why I am unclear ,cause they are just so adorable.... But because he is little they don't feel threatened and that is how people get bit by those pet dogs....

OMG DebiSue, how could you allow such an unprovoked attack....on the sofa?!  tee-hee.  I'd much rather deal with a trained dog.  I think we'd have far fewer problems if more people taught their dogs (and children) a little respect.  As my DH always say 'people suck'.

Echo looks great and like a whole lot of fun!  Great video
