I know this has been covered before but...here I go.
After a couple of months of having my boy I noticed he started to lose hair on his back, mostly on his rump. We took him to the vet to see what it was, they said it was probably skin allergies because it was not mange or anything else they were looking for.
I switched his food to Blue Buffalo and his back got much better as far as his coat growing back, but now it flakes and his skin has a rather bad smell from there. He now has more hair loss on his back legs and in the insides of his front legs which is mostly due to just itching and scratching. He doesn't chew any specific spots vigorously either.
I usually add salmon oil or extra virgin olive oil to his food but it doesn't seem to be making a significant difference. And every now and then giving him some egg.

Do you think this is something he could "grow out of " ? Or should I try changing him to a better food? If so which foods do you guys recommend? Have you had a GS with skin problems like this and any luck with it?
He is almost 8 months old now and has a black coat. Dont know if that makes a difference. Neither of his parents have this problem and I dont know about any of the other puppies from his litter but I can look into it.

Stay with the Blue buffalo. get Neem oil, it is the only thing that has helped a male we have with similar issues.

If it's allergies you'll have to find out what he's allergic to.
It may not be the food.
Consider changing one thing at a time and giving it enough time to see if there is a change in his condition.
Look at environment as well as food.
The dead skin cells may be what your smelling.
Start with a good bath and change his bedding and watch where he lays inside and out.
Stop with additives to make the search simpler. (food)
I know this head ache and wish you and him the best of luck.

Hi Lugas, was your dog chewing around the hind end and back? I think this might be a flea bite allergy. You might not see fleas, but all they have to do is bite. I use frontline all year round because of all the places we go. I also use dermal-soothe shampoo, I really like the smell and it lathers nice, keep the lather on for 10 minutes before rinse. I hope this helps
